Gifting/Giving a Microsoft or Xbox gift card, you let the lucky recipient choose the gift they want. There are no fees or expiration dates, and either card can be used to buy.

Unfortunately, in your case you won’t be able to use a Microsoft gift card as it will not be accepted by Minecraft website to purchase Minecraft realms for Minecraft Java Edition. Since you have to make the purchase from Minecraft website and not from Microsoft.
