Surface RT Video Playback Issues After Firmware Update

I have seen numerous people with this issue.

As soon as I install the latest firmware update video playback shows compression artifacts in almost all videos. Some lower quality MP4 videos seem to play okay.

No graphical issues in any games or other apps that demand a lot of graphics processing.

All apps up to date, this is definitely related to the firmware update, i've refreshed the machine a number of times to test and it's every time the firmware update is applied that the problem comes back.

Let's get an official answer on this asap please?

Greetings Carlos,

Can you confirm that the issue continues to occur when you have taken all Windows Updates as well?
Thank you for posting,

With a fully patched and updated Windows 8.0 RT I get the same problem.

This is after following all the same steps as Carlos.

What is the answer? I know there are more than 2 of us out there with this issue (I've seen others mention it online), but it's also obvious not EVERY person with an RT is, otherwise this would be acknowledged and fixed by now.

I hope you can help, or at least get some sort of official answer that this has been recognised as an issue. It's likely something that is affecting a specific hardware revision.

If the problem can't be fixed via a further update (Don't see why not as it was working fine before, and it's the update mentioned by Carlos that consistently re-introduces the problem), then the specific hardware revision(s) really should be recalled and replaced with brand new units with a new warranty.

I'd settle for now just to see this issue officially recognised and to know a fix is being worked on. It's not really acceptable when a recommended upgrade breaks a fundamental thing that people would want an RT for.

This isn't a rant by any means, I'd just like the problem acknowledged and fixed, it's a little frustrating to provide the details multiple times.

If I can find out the specific hardware revision, and Carlos his, and they are of the same then it shouldn't be difficult for MS to re-produce on a unit with the same HW Revision....

Same exact thing is happening to me. Fresh reinstall, video is fine. All firmware updates installed, video swamped with artifacts.

Greetings,

So I can get more detail, can you screenshot your Windows Update history and highlight the 2 KB's that Carlos mentioned.

I would like a better definition of the Artifacts that you are seeing.

I would however like to mention, that KB 2849636 is meant to be used for the Windows 8.1 Preview update.

Here is an example from Google Images showing compression artefacts:

http://b.vimeocdn.com/ts/630/038/63003894_640.jpg

I am uploading a video with a specific example, playing a video locally from the internal HDD. The same thing happens for me when streaming from apps such as netflix.

It's only during video playback that there are any issues, otherwise the screen and display is perfectly fine.

Plus this only occurs after applying the Firmware update mentioned by everybody else. I believe it's the one that was supposed to fix issues with sound, it's either the May or June one, but as soon as you install it, the problem returns.

It is 100% due to the software update, as a refresh or complete reinstall removes the problem every time, until you get the firmware update.

Once the video is uploaded I will post the link here.

I will get the update as soon as it shows as available on my RT and post back here if the issue is resolved for me too.

I have the exact same problem with my surface RT, this is a shame of a problem, please fix this a soon as possible.

I downloaded a lot of videos from www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com, specially to play on the go on my Surface RT, and believe me, every person that sees the video playback thinks Surface is the worst device ever, I don't.  But this problem is definitely a big issue with this device.

Please at least report you can reproduce it on a full updated Windows RT device running 8.0.

Regards
