Surface Pro 4 - Battery drain while in sleep

Hi All,

My SP4 never was spectacular with it's battery but now it's terrible. The battery gets from 100% to 0% in 1 night while the computer is supposed to be sleeping... I ran the Sleepstudy report (attached) and it looks like the Bluetooth is blame... What do I do with that?

Hi Knfevg,

Great job on running the Sleep Study tool to identify what's eating up your Surface battery while on Sleep Mode.

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far (aside from Sleep Study)? Any recent changes made on your device prior to this behavior?

To clarify, have you tried to manually download the latest drivers and firmware for your Surface model? If not yet, please see here for more information.

Regards.

Have you updated to 1803 recently?

That update seems to have problems with Toshiba and Intel SSDs which drains the battery very fast and also causes bluescreens / restarts without bluescreens.

Here is the report for the last 7 days. The computer just looses power even in sleep mode....

Please help! The surface is used currently as a desktop as I cannot unplug it, close the lid and be sure that it will turn on in a few hours...

Hi Knfevg,

We understand how important for you to resolve the issue. We suggest that run the power troubleshooter and see if it'll resolve the issue. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot.

  2. Select power, then click Run troubleshooter.

You can also check this article for additional information about Surface battery and power.

From your Sleep Study I suppose I can say your system is using around 7% of the battery per hour while in Modern Standby.  My system only uses 1% but the total capacity of the battery must be considered, so you might be actually be closer to 5%, which is still high.

Regrettably, Microsoft has changed the format of the Sleep Study so it does not show which components are using the power as it used to do.  So I cannot point to any one component while your system is in Modern Standby.

You might check the System - Power and see if you have your system set to disconnect the network while on battery or try one of the other settings.

I have my system set to go into hibernation afrer two hours which might stop some of the drain in yur situation also.  Be aware, I do not have a Surface product.

I will mention one more thing regarding the Sleep Study reports.  It appears if you have your system under Settings-System-Power&sleep, to "Let Windows Handle" the Network connection when on battery, then you may see different info available.  If you change that to "Never" or "Always", it should break out components using power.

After you make the change, you may have to restart or just give it some time to modify what info it shows.
