'Hey Cortana' slow down Windows

Since anniversary update to now, build 14393.222, all updates are installed, I have a common problem of 'Hey Cortana' in different Surface Pro 4 I5 8G 256GB units.

When 'Hey Cortana' is turning on, use Edge or just do something else, after a period of time, whole Windows system is being extremely slow, such as opening 'Task Manager' and changing the order in 'Processes' tab.

Now I can only do these things for temporarily:

1. Turn off 'Hey Cortana'.

2. Restart computer, but problem would occur again.

3. End 'Cortana' in 'Task Manager', but problem would occur again.

4. Restart 'Windows Explorer' in 'Task Manager', but problem would occur again.

5. When system get slow, use voice search of 'Cortana' once, but problem would occur again.

Does any one encounter this problem? How to solve it?

Hi, thanks for your information, but it's no help at all.

I already installed all updates to now.

My SP4 has restarted, reset times to times, even get replacement, problem has occurred at different units.

Start menu troubleshooter said no problem is found.

Local account without login Microsoft account can't use full functions of Cortana

BTW, reset Windows also means recreating local account, so I have tried.

Hi!

It's different problem in that post, and that problem has been fixed since 14393.222.

Now my SP4 is on build 14393.321, older or newer driver still has same problem.

Try to re-register the Cortana components:

  1. Open an elevated PowerShell prompt by typing powershell in the Cortana search box.
  2.  Right-click on the Windows Powershell result and select Run as administrator.
  3.  Select Yes on the UAC prompt.
  4. On the elevated PowerShell prompt, type:

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Let us know how it turns out.

Best regards.

Hi, after testing, the problem is not caused by 'Hey Cortana', problem's still in there even disable it after a period of time of using windows.

I've reinstall my SP4 by recover image and updated windows up to date, without install any other softwares, 'Task Manager' and system can still be lag and frozen, the only thing I did was using Edge.

When system got lag, I have to restart 'Windows Explorer' or computer like I said before.

Now I install and use Chrome as default browser, until now, problem does not happen.

---Update---

Unfortunately, the problem also happen while using Chrome...

Yes, the Edge is responsible for this problem.

It happens often when you play embedded video - Edge somehow limits the max speed of the CPU to 0.4-0.6 GHz and stays like that (at least on my i7 SP4).

I believe it's connected to marketing - "the Edge works longer on the battery than other browsers" - yes, it does by cheating (lowering CPU speed). Unfortunately, due to a bug it slows down whole Surface.

So, Microsoft please stop cheating or do that properly.

This problem I encounter also, I have to close the tab or close Edge.

The problem I mentioned may due to Windows Explorer, I can not figure it out.

SP4 becomes worse each update, really frustrated...

Not happening with my i7 SP4.  It's not MS marketing it's something amiss with your SP4.

Did you download the recovery image from Microsoft?  If yes then I would reinstall using Windows 10 pro installation usb.  I would also check the 5 firmware entry versions in Device Manager to verify they are installed and up-to-date.
