Change screen resolution of an external monitor to surface 4 pro

I cannot change the screen resolution at all for the external monitor, which is 4K, in my surface 4 pro i7 with Intel graphics 640. The Intel graphics control panel does not display in this computer. The systems settings of windows either disable or do not allow setting the screen resolution of the external monitor up to 3840x2160. I tried REGEDIT changes with no success. The monitor is connected via an HDMI cable and an HDMI-MiniDisplayPort adaptor. The Microsoft help center specifies that my computer can support 4K in an external monitor.

What to do?

Hi,

Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a compatibility issue that limits the capability of your 4K external monitor to change the display to high resolution. May we know if you are using a docking station to connect your 4K external monitor or you connect it directly to your Surface Pro 4? We will be waiting for your update.

Thank you.

Thank you. I am using a cable HDMI and after an HDMI to a mini-DisplayPort adapter which connects to the mini-Displayport input of Surface 4 Pro.

Thank you for the update. Have you considered using a docking station to connect your 4K monitor to your Surface Pro 4? If you have a friend or somebody you know that have a docking station, please ask them if you can try to connect your Surface Pro 4 and your 4K external monitor. Keep us updated.

Regards.

Why should we have to buy another piece of equipment when all the connectors are available natively? if a display port is made available on the Surface Pro 4, connecting to it should allow for the higher res with appropriate drivers.

The Intel graphics control panel does not display in this computer.

You would get it if you installed the Intel driver instead of the Microsoft one.

However, have you tried connecting to your external monitor with Project, Second Screen Only?  (Win+P, End, Enter and then Tab, Enter to OK the Keep this? prompt).

There are some parameters that you need to be aware of when trying to connect to Hi-res external screens.  E.g. in particular your Refresh rate may be unexpectedly limited.

Maybe this could help others. I ended up ordering a mini-display port to Display port cable for under 20$ and it works fine now. I suppose the HDMI dongle is limited to the same res the Surface is set at.

I already use a mDP to DP cable...
This is how the screen setting looks like.
If I use uplicate displays ( surface pro and the VX4380-4K ) it works at 4k, but screen goes black from time to time
