Surface Pro 3, ALL updates Installed, Fan running immediately, Overheating

I have a surface pro 3, with all updates installed as of Sept 5 2016.

Recently, the fan comes on immediately after powering on and the device is overheating if I actually do much of anything.

I have disabled all start up programs.

I am not running CPU intense applications like video services or games.

I use outlook, occasionally word, excel.  Also running Edge and Chrome from time to time.

I have run task manager and nothing is eating CPU.

My research online hasn't come up with anything that works.  I would really like to avoid rebuilding the device...

I have the exact same issue after the update. Fan is constantly running. I checked Task manager and no major CPU process is running. No file indexing is running.

I know there were some manufacturing issues in 2014--but mine has been fine until just this week.  I would like to know if there are diagnostics or tools I can run to figure out why the fan is ALWAYS running and why it's so hot on the lower right corner in particular, and the right side in general (as you look at the screen).  The left side doesn't heat up.

There is a claim on the Surfaceforums.net website (here: http://www.surfaceforums.net/threads/cpu-always-utilized-with-latest-update.21403/ ) that this is resolved in an Microsoft Insider early build that should be pushed out at some point in the near future.

I'm having the exact same problem and it's really quite an issue.

Same here.  I hope MS fixes this really soon other wise I'll have to roll back but I rather not have to do that.

I brought my surface to a Microsoft store and the technician tried to fix it with a firmware update.  It's still running hot, but hasn't shut down yet.  It appears to be a problem related to the battery on my computer.  That is where it is the hottest to the touch (lower right looking at screen).

He also suggested that I deep power cycle the laptop a few times (run the battery down completely and recharge, do it again a few times).

I will let you all know what happens in the next week or so.

Keeping my fingers crossed...

I had this same issue until I saw this.

No matter what I did nothing fixed it. I'm not sure if you have prey installed or not, but if you do I would suggest completely uninstalling it. Within minutes of completely uninstalling it my surface pro was like new.

Hope this helps, and if not good luck.

I am not running prey or any apps when it overheats.  I disabled all startup apps.  Just overheated while recharging battery after drawing it all the way down.

I will try drawing it down, letting it completely cool, then recharging it.

I uninstalled Prey and so far I think that solved the problem but I'm wondering what caused Prey to act like that in the first place.   It has been on my SP3 since purchase and I don't recall it ever giving me this kind of trouble before.

Same here!  I'm glad the fan noise is gone, but this is perplexing.  It was also pretty tough to uninstall.  I had to use the 'special' instructions here: http://help.preyproject.com/article/190-how-to-uninstall-prey
