I have a Surface Pro (first gen) running Windows 8.1. I have the Surface Pro connected to the official Docking Station accessory, which also has a number of USB devices connected to it, as well as a secondary 24" monitor using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI
adapter. I use a wireless Logitech MX mouse connected via the standard Logitech Unity receiver.
My issue is that my mouse cursor turns invisible shortly after the boot up sequence is finished. I can see the "busy cursor" after entering Desktop mode, and then it begins to flicker, and after about 10 seconds it disappears entirely and does not return.
If I randomly move the mouse around, I can see UI elements in apps highlighting, and I can right-click and get context-sensitive menus, so the mouse itself is still working, but the cursor is not visible.
During my troubleshooting (reinstalling both System-level mouse drivers and Logitech mouse drivers, disabling all Startup items, disabling non-Microsoft services, etc.) I was not able to fix the issue, until I started checking the Docking Station itself.
I unplugged the AC adapter from the dock, and plugged it back in, and my cursor reappeared and continued to work for that session. It appeared that resetting solved the issue, and I was hoping it was permanent, but the next time I restarted my Surface Pro
(while still seated in the Dock), the cursor disappeared again right after boot up.
Power-cycling the Dock returns the cursor to normal working mode every time, so this seems like an issue with the Dock.
I have tried undocking the Surface Pro, and connecting my Logitech wireless USB mouse directly to the Surface's USB port, and connecting my external monitor directly to the Mini DisplayPort on the Surface, and the cursor problem does NOT occur, which also
leads me to believe the Docking Station is at fault. It does not appear to be an issue with my Mini DisplayPort > HDMI adapter, or the wireless mouse receiver. I've also unplugged ALL of my USB devices from the Dock as well, and the cursor problem remains.
To me this seems like a bug with the Surface Docking Station that manifests when an external display is used, in addition to a wireless USB mouse.
Do I have any options? The Docking Station doesn't have any firmware that can be updated that I am aware of, so short of a future Windows OS update addressing this issue, is this simply a flaw in the Docking Station that may never be fixed?
