Error when upgrading my Surface Go device from Windows 10 Home in S mode to Windows 10 Pro in S mode: “Something happened and we couldn’t start the upgrade”

I’m attempting to upgrade my Surface Go device from Windows 10 Home in S mode to Windows 10 Pro in S mode.  But when I go to the Store and start the upgrade, I get an error message:  “Something happened and we couldn’t start the upgrade.  Try again.”  If I try again, I get the same error.

Update 8/11/2018:

We have completed our investigation and have published a fix for this issue. If you had been affected, you can try installing the upgrade again from the Microsoft Store.

Please also ensure the Microsoft Store app is up to date:

  • Select the Start button, and then select Microsoft Store 
  • Select the More (…) menu, and then select Downloads and updates
  • Select Get updates.
