Surface Pen not working

Surface Pen will no longer write on the screen, no matter which app I'm using. New battery installed, still won't write. Clicking the end cap opens OneNote and the Bluetooth shows it as being paired.

Hi Jim,

We'd like to ask you some questions so we can get this resolved quickly:

  • What version of the pen are you using? Are you using a Surface Pen with Two Side Buttons (Ver 2)? Or a Surface Pen with Single Button on Flat Edge (Ver 3)?
  • Has inking ever worked?
  • Has the pen button ever worked?
  • Have you ever dropped the pen?
  • Have you ever opened the pen prior to contacting support?

We'll keep an eye out to your response.

Regards.

I have the pen that is flat on one side with a single button.   Until recently the pen worked fine with no problems writing in the various apps that allow it.   Never dropped the pen, did replace the battery just in case Ithat was low.  Last evening, I installed (or reinstalled) the surface pen app from the MS site, the pen worked fine again until I went to bed.

When I tried the pen today, it was totally dead, even the top click button did not open OneNote, I removed it from the Bluetooth device list, then reconnected it, the click button on the top works but it once again will not write.

I am beginning to think the pen is defective.   Had thought maybe being part of the Windows Insider updates may have caused an issue.   Any help will be appreciated.

there are reports starting to come in that state

"I found that another symptom of the issue is that multi-touch stops working
(e.g. you can no longer pinch to zoom)

Not really a solution, more of a hint as to the issue: I found that when this
occurs disabling/enabling the "Intel(R) Precise Touch Device" (under Human
Interface Devices in Device Manager) does get it to work again."

can you try that?

Barb,

I will try your suggestion the next time this happens.  I tripped down to the MS Kiosk at the Mall and the young lady tried out my pen on another SurfaceBook and as one would expect, it worked like a charm.  She said it had to be a driver update and recommended I make sure all updates had been downloaded and installed.

I followed her suggestion and downloaded anything that looked like it had to do with the pen.   After rebooting, it began to work again and works fine today.   Time will tell.   Thank you for your persistent effort to assist me with this matter and I'm sorry that I am so techno-deficient that I cannot explain exactly what I updated to get this done.

I can't find where so here it goes, I've been having this problem over and over again and today during my first cup of coffee I learned if:  you turn off the pc the hold the power and volume up button for ten seconds and ignore the screen prompts , then hit the power button again , which is what I did , you'll gat your pen back. I WAS AMAZED AFTER DAYS WITHOUT IT!!!
