Themes in Tablet mode

Please try open Windows Settings > Personalization > Colors. Scroll down and look for the Transparency effects. Toggle the option OFF.

Thank you for the response. I'm sorry to hear that it did not work but just to make sure, what you mean is to have the background image still visible when have the device in tablet mode like the image below, right? 

Yes, exactly.   And I am not sure why, but now it looks like that!  Maybe the latest update? Or a restart?

I have tried many things - but now I have default Windows set to dark, default app to 'light', transparency to 'on' and it is holding the theme background when in tablet mode.   The themes are ones I have downloaded from Microsoft and I will see how it goes when I change, which I usually do with the seasons.

The only other thing I have noticed is that my old Surface used to change to/from tablet mode whenever I detached/attached the keyboard;  With this one it does not happen automatically.   Not a big deal, just different.

Good to hear that the background transparency is now working. For the tablet mode switching automatically, try to check Windows Settings > System > Tablet Mode. Under When this device automatically switches tablet mode on or off, set it to Don't ask me and always switch. 

Well, my display background problem is back;  no matter which theme setting I choose, it does not switch, but remains totally black.  

This occurs even if I choose a solid color background.  I can see the 'theme' until I touch the screen and then it goes away.
