Terrible battery life on the Surface Pro 6

I recently just picked up the new surface pro 6 with 128gb 8gbRAM and i5. It has been a great device however the battery life is concerning. Since this device is so new, I dont know how good the battery is supposed to be, but I loose 7% of my battery by using Youtube for 20 minutes on recommended battery and suggested brightness. I dont know if this is normal or do I have a defective device.

Hello LeoLi5,

Thank you for raising this concern to us.

Based on the information that you have mentioned, we suggest you to download and install Firmware update for Surface Pro 6. Go to Download and installed the Firmware driver

Proceed to the following basic trouble shooting steps below if the issue still occur.

Check connections and clean the connector on the power supply:

Dirt or debris on the connector’s pins could be preventing a power connection.

1. Unplug the power supply from the wall.

2. Clean the pins on the connector with a pencil eraser.

3. Clean the pins on the connector with a cotton swab wet with rubbing alcohol.

4. After you are done cleaning the pins, make sure all the pins on the connector are dry, plug the power supply into the wall, and then plug the connector back into your Surface.

Remove and reinstall battery driver.

1. From Device Manager, expand the Batteries category.

2. Double-tap or double-click Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, select the Driver tab, and select Uninstall > OK.

3. From the Action menu, select Scan for hardware changes.

Download and Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit:

Please go to Surface Diagnostic ToolkitWhich can often fix most software and driver issues. This tool will ensure that you have the latest driver and firmware updates on the Surface and also check for software issues that may be affecting the device's performance. After running the tool, perform a forced shutdown by pressing the power button for 10 seconds or until the screen goes off. When you restart the Surface, the updates will be applied and the software will be loaded properly.

Force the device to shut down and restart (varies by new vs old generation):

Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both. The Surface may boot to UEFI. This is normal. Have the customer exit UEFI.

You can go to Force a shut down and restart your Surfacefor further information.

Shut down and charge:

This will allow Surface to charge as quickly as possible without interference.

From Start, select Powerand then select Shut down. Allow the device to charge for about 45 minutes before turning back on.

*If all steps wouldn’t work, please proceed to the next steps.

Reset your Surface:

Please go toFresh Start and follow onscreen instruction.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted of the outcome.

Thank you.

Hello LeoLi5,

Thank you for sending the screen shot of the battery report. While I am checking the report that you have sent, can you please also run the battery report in windows  command prompt? For us to check as well if it will provide the same trend.

Here's how:

  • Run cmd as Administrator
  • type powercfg/battery report

Looking forward to your reply.

Ok, so should I request for a exchange of my device from Microsoft? But will they even agree for a exchange just because the battery is faulty?

You need to upload that file to OneDrive and then share a link to it here. You
posted a link to a local file on your Surface that we can't see.
