Surface Pro 7 Front Camera Not Working

I am having an issue

The issue is that the front camera of my Surface Pro 7 seized to work. In Device Manager it is marked with a yellow exclamation mark and a status of "STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE").

The only suggestion l haven't tried, yet, is the suggestion of "IT Troy" (first entry on page 4) where he suggest to install an older driver version for the Intel Control Logic device - quote:

"... Select the 12/16/2019 version of the driver (42.18362.3.196) ..."

Since several people commented that this fixed their problem I would like to give that a try, but when I do a driver re-install with "Let me pick from a list ..." I only have a single entry "Intel Control Logic" without any version number.

Where could I possibly find and download that older driver version? I tried to install an older .msi package from the Surface Pro 7 driver download page but - since I already installed the newest these attempts always end in "A newer version is already installed" and then the installer terminates.

Thus:

1. where can I download that older driver from?

and

2. how do I make it appear in the driver selection so that I can give that older driver version try and see whether it might resolve that issue?

Thank you for posting your inquiry here in Microsoft Community, mmo17.

We are sorry to hear that the front camera stopped functioning. The drivers/firmware are downloaded as a package/set.

Try the methods below and see how it goes:

  • Try resetting the Camera app, go to settings > apps & features > Camera > Advance Options > Reset then test and capture a photo/record a video.

  • Re-install Intel logic driver. Go to device manager > look for system devices > find the Intel Control Logic > Right-click on it, click uninstall then check the box that says "Delete the driver software for the device" > Then restart the device.

If the issue persists, let us know so we can further assist.

I went through these loops already.

The diagnostic tool kit and the the camera app don't "see" the front camera at all (presumably because its in this dreaded "STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE").

And I uninstalled the Intel Control Logic driver and rebooted numerous times already. There are actually THREE "Intel Control Logic" entries in device manager and I first uninstalled the top one only (as described in the cited thread) and later ALL THREE (including their SW) and then rebooted each time. And I tried the entire procedure 3 times already, but that didn't help.

And - as I wrote - I have a single entry only when trying to hand-select a specific driver version for this Intel Control Logic. Hence my question where I can download previous versions of that driver, because that - at least according to said thread - seems to have solved the issue - at least for some people.

Go into the UEFI and toggle the cameras OFF, wait 30 seconds, toggle ON and restart. See if this resolves your issue.

  1. Shut down your Surface.

  2. Press and hold the volume-up button on your Surface and at the same time, press and release the power button.

  3. When you see the Surface logo, release the volume-up button.
The UEFI menu will display within a few seconds.

The individual older drivers are not available. That probably won't solve the problem but if you go to Download Surface Pro 7 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center and download and run the older SurfacePro7_Win10_17763_20.020.2886.0.msi after deleting the driver, you MIGHT get an older driver.

To completely rule out software/drivers, you would need to do a wipe and recovery from the downloadable recovery image. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage

(with a different Windows computer if yours is not working properly)

and download a recovery image for your Surface. You will need a 16GB or 32GB USB stick (also called a flash drive) formatted FAT32 (use a Windows computer).  You can't use an actual external USB hard drive for this and don't use anything larger than a 32 GB USB stick. Best to purchase and use a new, previously unused USB stick for this. Use FULL format and not quick format and give the volume a name like surfboot. Unzip/extract the recovery zip to the root of the formatted USB stick.
