Surface Pro 4 phantom touch issue

I have a Surface Pro 4 1724 that has recently started suffering from a phantom touch - a ghostly white circle at the bottom right of the screen as if the screen is being touched there:

The trackpad doesn't work and, whilst a USB mouse does, the cursor flickers unacceptably. I've followed the instructions here but they don't work; uninstalling the Surface Touch two HID - compliant touch screen options fixes the display corruption but obviously disables the touch screen. Rebooting the SP sees the problem return as the device reinstalls what I assume is buggy firmware.

I've reset the device a couple of times, formatting it and reinstalling Windows 10 (20H2) from a USB drive and whilst the problem is not present at first, after a number of updates are installed from Windows Update the problem recurs. I have a number of other SPs, all with 20H2 installed and none of them have this issue.

Can someone help please?

Hi CalumMorrison2,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

This could be related to a driver issue, we suggest the following:

• Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

• Download and install the drivers and firmware for your Surface > Choose Surface Pro 4 then click Download on the next page. > Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. > After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

• Boot the device to the UEFI settings and check if the issue still persists on the UEFI.

Please let us know about the issue by replying on this thread.

Kind regards,

John Neil_J

Thanks for your reply; apologies for the delay in my response, I was away from the office. I'm not sure how, but without doing anything, when I booted the SP today it was OK. I'll monitor it for a few days, but it appears to have fixed itself, despite having had various reboots prior to this.

Weird...

Best regards

Calum
