Jack

Hi Jack,

Thank you for bringing this up. Based on the information you’ve provided, it is possible that this issue is software or hardware driven.

Just to set proper expectations, we may go through a series of troubleshooting steps in order to resolve your concern. By the way, we’d like to know if you’ve made any recent changes in your device prior to the issue. Also, have you tried any troubleshooting steps as an attempt to resolve the issue? If yes, kindly tell us the troubleshooting steps you have done.

In the meantime, we recommend that you check the connections and clean the connector on the power supply. Dirt or debris on the connector’s pins could be preventing a power connection. To do this, kindly follow these steps:

1. Unplug the power supply from the wall.
2. Clean the pins on the connector with a pencil eraser.
3. Clean the pins on the connector with a cotton swab wet with rubbing alcohol.
4. After you are done cleaning the pins, make sure all the pins on the connector are dry, plug the power supply into the wall, and then plug the connector back into your Surface.

If the issue remains the same, you can remove and reinstall the battery driver. Here’s how:

1. From Device Manager, expand the Batteries category.
2. Double-tap or double-click Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, select the Driver tab, and select Uninstall > OK.
Note: For Surface Book devices there will be two battery drivers to uninstall.
3. From the Action menu, select Scan for hardware changes.

If it is still the same, we suggest that you run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit on your device. This toolkit will install all the available updates for your device, check for any errors, and fix them. You may refer to the article for more information and step-by-step guide on how to run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Then, observe if the issue persists.

If you continue to have this issue even after performing the above steps, please reply to this thread. The system will notify us so we can get back to you and provide you more answers.

Many thanks.

I completed all the steps you outlined all the way through the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and the problem still persists:  Battery not detected.  Any additional suggestions?

Thanks,

Jack

We appreciate you giving us an update. If the issue remains the same, we recommend that you perform a force shut down on your device and restart it. Performing a Forced Shutdown is like removing the battery from a laptop or unplugging a desktop PC. It resets the hardware and clears all the cache and memory for your hardware. To do this, press and hold down the power button for a full 10 seconds, until the screen turns off, then release the power button. Then, press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If you’re experiencing the same issue, then it would be best to reinstall/reset your Surface Pro 4 using a downloadable recovery image for your device. This option reimages the entire device, including the partition on the hard drive. Please be informed that it is important to back up your personal data before performing this to avoid data loss. This will also require you to reinstall desktop apps and run updates after the process to avoid encountering issues in the future. If in any case that the issue persists, then the root cause is more likely to be hardware related.

We appreciate your patience.

Kindly tell us how the issue progresses. Similarly, if you have more questions, please inform us by replying to this post.

Many thanks.
