Surface pro 4 can’t find it’s own hard drive

A few days ago my surface pro 4 asked me for its bitlocker recovery key, after following the instructions and finding the key it was back to working normally. A day later when I turned it on it got stuck in UEFI bootloop. I have followed all the instructions online to reset, repair, reinstall etc. but nothing has worked. As a last resort I downloaded the data eraser tool onto a USB. Upon plugging this in a message was displayed saying there was no disk drive. Anyone have any clue??? This is my university laptop and i couldnt manage without it.

Hi Isabelle,

I understand that it's important for you to resolve this issue for your studies. The error message you received when you tried to reset the Surface using a recovery drive suggests that the device is unable to detect its disk drive. First, boot into the Surface UEFI and check if the UEFI displays a boot drive error icon . Refer to this link to learn how to get into the Surface UEFI.

If you see the icon, then it means this is a hardware problem. The device would need to be replaced. Please contact Microsoft Support or take the Surface to a Microsoft Store to get further assistance.

In case you do not see a boot drive error icon in the UEFI, exit and restart from the UEFI. As your Surface boots, perform a forced shutdown. Simply press the power button for a full 10 seconds, then restart it normally.

Please update the thread by replying to this post so I can help you further.

Regards.

Hello,

Definitely saw the icon in the corner. After going through microsoft support I was told since it was out of warranty I would have to pay £400 for a replacement. I decided to give reinstalling windows one last shot and to my suprise it went straight to windows sign in no problem. My guess is that there is a loose connection inside as this is my second surface pro after the first one failed.
