Surface Dock 1 does not work microphones with Surface Laptop Studio

I have used a Surface Book 2 with a Surface Dock (first version) for a number of years. I had a Logitech C920 webcam, Blue Snowball mic, speakers, and two monitors plugged into the dock.

I just upgraded to a Surface laptop studio (Intel Core i7 11370H, GF RTX 3050 Ti, 16 gb RAM, 512 gb SSD). The Surface Dock 2 wasn't in the budget and the original Sufrace Dock should have what I need. My employer set it up with Windows 10 Pro (Version 22H2 Build 19045.2604).

The switchover went pretty seamlessly except that microphones plugged into the dock did not work. At first both microphones (Blue and C920) did not work. They were recognized by the system, but did not have any sound levels. They were not disabled, but just didn't have any sound. Under the microphone properties, the levels were blank and could not be adjusted. I have an alternate camera that has a USB-C connector. The sound on that one works when plugged directly into the computer via one of the USB-C ports, but not into the dock with a USB-C to USB-A adapter. The video on both cameras worked when plugged into the dock.

After this, I tried a USB-C hub, the Blue microphone started working in both the hub and surprisingly in the Dock. However, the microphone on the cameras did not work on either the hub or the dock. We then tried updating the firmware (Surface_Dock_FwUpdate_1.53.139_Win10_17763_20.075.41193_0_AMD64.msi) and restarting. The microphone on the cameras still do not work. At this point, the Blue microphone is enough, but there seems to be some issue at hand. It seems like the Dock should be able to pass the microphone audio from a camera through to the computer.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

MM

Hello MMMspi,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

We're sorry to hear about this issue on your device. We understand how important this setup is for you. Definitely, not the experience we want you to have.

As what you mentioned, you were able to make the Blue microphone worked on both USB-C hub and its dock, but the microphone on your webcam did not work even on the hub or the dock. With that being said, it means that this issue might have something to do with the webcam itself.

If I may ask, do you still happen to have your old Surface device to test the microphone on your webcam via USB-C hub or the dock? Or can you please try your webcam on a different Surface device using the hub or the dock?

This test would be the best way to further isolate the issue. Otherwise, you might also want to check Troubleshoot Surface Dock or Surface Docking Station - Microsoft Support.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

StevenK

The C920 works perfectly (audio and video) when plugged into the older Surface Book 2 which has a USB-A port or through the USB-C hub. I just tried to be completely certain. It worked perfectly when it was on the dock. It only stops working when plugged into the Surface Dock with the Surface Laptop Studio.

Thoughts?

There are definitely issues with audio. I restarted the computer this morning and the Blue mic plugged into the dock no longer works. I restarted the computer and the dock speakers do not work either. I have never had these problems with the old Surface Book 2. I only get these problems with the Surface Laptop Studio. Is there an incompatibility with the Surface Dock and the Laptop Studio?

Thanks for keeping us posted, MMMspi.

This might also be an issue with incompatibility as Surface Laptop Studio has newer drivers and hardware compared to Surface Book 2. And also, Surface Laptop Studio is already running in Windows 11.

At this point, it would be better if we could try the latest Surface Dock 2 and see if the issue persists or not. In addition, you might also want to confirm with your webcam manufacturer if it supports the latest Windows version.

Don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

I still am having issues. The audio output stopped through the dock the other day (but restarted again).

There wasn't money in the budget to upgrade the dock, and I didn't think I'd need to. The Laptop Studio was purchased with grant funding for education purposes. The grant money was spent, and now I am looking to see if I can find another $200 to get the Dock 2.

Could downgrading the Surface Laptop Studio to Windows 10 be causing some of the problems also?

That's unfortunate to hear, MMMspi.

You can try downgrading to Windows 10 to confirm whether this has something to do with its operating system. Otherwise, you might want to get in touch with the Microsoft assisted support to get your device diagnosed and for real-time assistance. Here's how:

On the Surface app

  1. Open the Surface App and select Help & support > Get help.

  2. Type in the problem you need help with.

  3. Look at any available solutions offered and select Contact Support.

Via web browser

  1. Go to Contact Us - Microsoft Support and select Devices.

  2. Choose your preferred support method.

  3. Type in the problem you need help with.

  4. Look at any available solutions offered and select Contact Support.

For detailed instructions on how to contact our support via web browser, you might want to see this thread: click here. In any event the link won’t go through, try it on another browser or In-private browser.
