My pen is not working properly on Surface Pro 7

Hello,

I recently got a Surface Pro 7 and I bought a pen that is an alternative to the Surface's pen. My problem is that the pen is writing/drawing/clicking from 1cm away from the screen, meaning I can't write with it. I tried calibrating the screen for the pen but when I start the calibration process there's a message asking "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?", the app is called Digitiser Calibration Tool. The problem is when I click Yes nothing happens.

Hello, Giovanni Nunes de Souza.

Welcome to Microsoft Community!

I've noticed that you're using another stylus in place of the Surface Pen and are experiencing functionality that is not being applied properly.

First of all, I don't know the exact model of your stylus, and it's difficult to guarantee that a stylus other than the Surface Pen will work perfectly with a Surface device.

You are trying to make adjustments using the Digitiser Calibration Tool, but when you are asked “Do you want to allow this application to change your device?” and click yes, there is no response. and after clicking yes, nothing changes. This may be due to the fact that the Digitiser Calibration Tool is not recognizing the corresponding Surface Pen.

I would recommend that you first perform a simple check of your device using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit:

Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

Observe your Surface Pro 7 for any malfunctions.

Also, you can try updating your Surface Pro 7 drivers and firmware to troubleshoot potential driver issues and maintain device performance:

Download Surface Pro 7 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center

Please reboot your device after the download is complete to apply the update.

Next, you can ask a family member or friend if they have an extra Surface Pen that can help you with the test.

If the other Surface Pen works perfectly on this Surface Pro 7, there is some fault or compatibility issue with your other stylus.

(You can also bring your device to the nearest Microsoft store and after speaking with a staff member, I'm sure they can provide you with testing conditions)

If you find that other Surface Pens are also not working on the Surface Pro 7, then we need to troubleshoot this Surface Pro 7 at the hardware level.

You can get in touch with Surface support via the Surface App and I will share the following steps with you:

I will share with you the steps to reach out to support via Surface App:

1. You can open the app by typing Surface App in the taskbar search box.

2. Click on Help & Support on the right side and click on Get Help.

3. Enter the specific problem you are experiencing in the box (Surface Pen won't work) and click Contact Support below.

4. On the next screen, select “Technical Support” from the Service category.

5. Next, you can choose your contact information and time, and a Surface support person will contact you.

I wish you all the best.

Best Regards.

I don't know exactly the model of my stylus because I got it from a friend. I have another friend that has the exact same one and it works for them.

I did everything you said but it still doesn't work properly. I'll try using my friend's pen and if it works I think I'll just get a new one.

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your reply.

First of all, I will share with you the guide about the recognition of Surface stylus here:

Identify your Surface Pen and features - Microsoft Support

And judging from your reply, the fact that you did not improve this after installing the driver update suggests that your device driver is not the cause of this problem. Meanwhile your driver should now be non-faulty, which is something to be happy about.

In the meantime, I'll be looking forward to your test results with other styluses here.

If you are about to purchase a new Surface Pen, I recommend you consider the Surface Pen with no clip:

This is a very adaptable model for Surface Pro 7.

I hope the suggestions I have shared with you will help you.

Best Regards.
