Is Surface Pro 7 battery life actually worse than Surface Pro 6

Microsoft states 13.5 hours of battery life for "local video playback" for Surface Pro 6 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-pro-6/8zcnc665slq5?icid=surfacedept_nav3_surfacefamily_100218&activetab=pivot:techspecstab) and 10.5 hours for Surface Pro 7 "based on typical Surface device usage" (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-pro-7/tech-specs). Looks like with Surface Pro 7 launch Microsoft has changed the battery life test to be more realistic which is a good thing but can they share Surface Pro 6 numbers using the same test so we have an apples to apples comparison for the popular i5, 8G RAM, 256G drive configuration?

Hello RahulKapoor,

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. Can you be more specific what you mean by "can they share Surface Pro 6 numbers using the same test so we have an apples to apples comparison for the popular i5, 8G RAM, 256G drive configuration?"

Looking forward for your response.

The test information is from Microsoft in the links I provided. Microsoft needs to be more specific and consistent in reporting battery usage and provide Surface Pro 6 numbers using the same test being used for Surface Pro 7:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-pro-6/8zcnc665slq5?icid=surfacedept_nav3_surfacefamily_100218&activetab=pivot:techspecstab

Surface Pro 6 battery life: Up to 13.5 hours of battery life for local video playback. Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2018 using preproduction Intel® Core™ i5, 256GB, 8 GB RAM device. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during video playback. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network and Auto-Brightness disabled.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-pro-7/tech-specs
Battery life Surface Pro 7: Up to 10.5 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage. Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2019 using preproduction software and preproduction Intel® Core™ i5, 256GB, 8 GB RAM device. Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby. The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing 8 popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150nits with Auto-Brightness disabled. Wi-Fi was connected to a network.

Hi RahulKapoor ,

At this time we do not have a provided direct comparison between specific units. our standard disclaimer calls out the test result criteria: Battery life Surface Pro 7: Up to 10.5 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage. Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2019 using preproduction software and preproduction Intel® Core™ i5, 256GB, 8 GB RAM device. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.

I have the sp7 i5 128gb 8gb and i average around 5 hours when using the default recommended power plan and 60% brightness.  No games, just onenote, word, and edge. I've been to the store, they've reviewed my cfg battery report and say it's what's expected. It's roughly 50% of the suggested time, but there ain't no way any sp is getting 10 hours. i've owned multiple different models since the sp2 and none of them could regularly crack the 7 hour mark, including the sp6 which i was using up until last month. Don't leave home without your charger.

Several professional reviews have now found that Surface Pro 7 battery life is actually worse than Surface Pro 6 for ex.

Review 1: 7:50 (Pro 7) vs 15:34 (Pro 6): https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/21/microsoft-surface-pro-7-review-usb-c-price-specs/

Review 2: 7:30 (Pro 7) vs 9:20 (Pro 6): https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/microsoft-surface-pro-7

Review 3: TechRadar 6:02 (Pro 7) vs 8:45 (Pro 6), PCMark 3:12 (Pro 7) vs 4:00 (Pro 6): https://www.techradar.com/reviews/microsoft-surface-pro-7-review/2

Many were hoping that recent firmware updates would fix the battery life but that hasn't happened.

https://windowsreport.com/surface-pro-battery-drain/

Can anyone from Microsoft provide insights on what could be the cause and if a fix is in the works?

we know what the cause is. it's the new cpu/gpu combo. it's not a mystery. they're vastly faster and that comes at a power cost. I'd like to know how the hell they managed 8 hours on a sp6 doing anything never mind 15. i've owned 3 different 6's and never once broke an 8 hour battery life on a single one no matter what settings i tried. They were only used for onenote and word. i'm down 40% in 1.5 hours on my sp7 i5 8gb just doing browsing and word this morning. If you want battery life it's long been the rule that you buy a mac. that hasn't changed. I just wish apple made a decent hybrid.

Each newer generation of Intel processors has been providing performance advantages ALONG with battery life improvements.

Same has been the expectation for the 10th generation:

https://bgr.com/2019/08/21/intel-10th-gen-core-chips-comet-lake-gets-more-cores-ram-wi-fi-6/

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3432718/10th-gen-ice-lake-vs-comet-lake-cpu-buyers-guide.html

If the reduced battery life was a general 10th generation processor issue, reviewers would have noted that, and competitors like Dell XPS 2-in-1 would not have been seeing much better battery life with 10th generation procs.

I have a core i7 surface pro 7 and battery life is abysmal. At best I get 2-2.5 of "typical use" battery life. Microsoft support, while friendly, was unhelpful solving the issue. Terrible.

I'm so disappointed for many reasons and the short battery life is one of them! This is my first Surface and I will not upgrade to one in the future.

I have just purchased the Pro 7 and finding battery life terrible.

The battery power setting is set nearest to best battery life on slide bar in settings

I am getting 3-4 hrs at best. no gaming , no you tube.

Just emails, quoting in MYOB and some basic web browsing.

Not real impressed
