How to get NFC reader to work on Surface Go

I have a Surface Go, but I can't use the NFC reader.  It shows as installed in device manager, but when I open an app to use it, like GoToTags, it says no NFC device is installed.  Please help.  Microsoft support was unable to help me.

Hi Robbie,

We're sorry to hear you're having issues connecting your NFC reader.  For scenarios like this, since the hardware is being detected by Windows and not by the software app, one of the suggestions we would like you to do is to try to uninstall the software and re-install it with the device plugged in your Surface Go.

Normally error messages like this happen because the software needs to be configured with the actual device plugged in.  Another way to check, if you have another PC where you can insert the NFC reader and see if the other hardware can detect it and use the same functions.

If the issue would still persist after uninstalling and reinstalling the software, please reply back to this thread so we could further provide you with other steps to resolve this.

I think you just provided a canned answer...  There is no device to plug in.  The Go says it has a built-in NFC reader.  No application I use can find it or use it.

I need help troubleshooting this.

I found an app which at least reads a NTAG203 but not NTAG215 https://www.wakdev.com/en/apps/nfc-tools-pc-mac.html

I can't write any tags though, so I wonder whether this implementation has some limitations.

Also, I just remembered I have a Sony SBH52 bluetooth headset with NFC. I just tapped that on the Go and it asked whether I wanted to set up the device, tapped yes and it automatically paired it. So it does work, it just appears that the drivers aren't the standard NFC device type stuff for 3rd party software to work with at present.

I think we'll all need to start hassling software developers if there's a particular application we want that isn't supported.

Windows 10 Home build 1803. I've taken it out of S mode, but other than that I haven't done anything special or anything.

Alan,

Thanks for your update, can you tell me where abouts you place the tag on the tablet? how long does it take to detect. We have tried with a NTAG203 NDEF format and the software you linked and still not detecting anything.

Any chance you might be able to upload a video or screen recording showing exactly how it works?

Many Thanks

Dan

It recognises the tag pretty quickly. I didn't change any settings in that software, it defaults to read the tag info on first launch as you can see.

Alan,

This probably breaks rules of forum but is there any way we can contact you outside the forum regarding this matter, we are willing to compensate your time.

you can send me an email to dan.walmsley at gxgroup.com if you are able to help.

Many thanks

Dan

We got our tablet to work. In the end we did a fresh install and are able to read most tags.

Our suspicion is that the privacy settings when you first run the tablet were all disabled and this may have blocked the reader.
