How do I enable the TPM on a Surface Pro 7 so I can install Windows 11 as Microsoft state I can in their published support documents?

According to the article below, my Surface Pro 7 supports Windows 11 and it’s an upgrade option provided by Microsoft:

Surface supported operating systems - Microsoft Support

Also, according to the article below, my Surface Pro7 reaches end of life on February 28, 2024:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/surface-driver-firmware-lifecycle-support

So, the Surface Pro 7 is still supported before February 2024 and I should be able to install Windows 11

But I cannot install Windows 11 today, June 16, 2023 because Microsoft has taken away the option to enable the TPM in the firmware which I previously disabled in the firmware before updating the firmware.

So how do I install Windows 11 on my Surface Pro 7 before February 2024 if I cannot enable the TPM in the firmware?

This has afflicted other customers - for example SURFACE PRO 7 TPM MISSING! - Microsoft Community and sadly, I'm not aware of any fix that has been deployed to rectify this. Your only option may be to contact support for an exchange - You can try using a phone to contact support https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4051701/global-customer-service-phone-numbers - ask for Surface support. Use the phone numbers listed under *For Business Users* for your location (these also work for consumers/home users).

So Microsoft has removed the TPM menu from the firmware without providing any provisions to ensure the TPM is enabled before or after the firmware update? That is a mistake on Microsoft's part.

You say you don't support firmware downgrades so that the customer can enable the TPM themselves but why can't you deliver a firmware update that automatically sets the TPM status to enabled?

I don't have warranty on my Surface Pro 7 as it is over a year old so an exchange would be costly and I don't agree that is a reasonable suggestion considering this isn't a hardware fault. It is a software fault caused by Microsoft's actions on their part.

Updates pushed via the Windows Update system are well know for many years for pushing changes that both cause and rectify software issues so it is unreasonable to suggest an exchange for a software fault that Microsoft can rectify remotely via Windows Update.

It would be very simple to at least push an update that displays a read-only TPM status in the firmware so that customers can observe that the TPM is present and enabled. Why aren't Microsoft at least doing that?

First, I'm an unpaid volunteer and do not work for Microsoft. If you want background on what a Microsoft MVP is, see https://mvp.microsoft.com/en-us/Overview and for Volunteer Moderators see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/page/faq#faqWhosWho1 - so I can't tell you why Microsoft does or doesn't provide updates or acknowledge issues.

Second, there certainly have been other people complaining about this issue, but I don't know what happened if/when they opened support cases. It may be worth a phone call to see if they will offer a no cost replacement (ask for a manager, refer them to the link I provided above as well).

I wish I could do more, but I'm a customer, just like you, and a volunteer here.

Hey Barb,
I have the same Surface Laptop 3 problem. After installing the first updates over Windows update I had to give my bitlocker key after every restart. So the TPM was active before and got deactivated through the install and now i am not able to activate it again.
I tried the SEMM stuff and also the complete reinstall of the surface firmware.

I was reading a lot of posts about the same problem with different devices and I appreciate your effort and that you combined the cases over nearly 3 years now.
This device is 2 days old... I will contact the support next week.

Is it possible to communicate with someone from the surface team about this? Perhaps they can share an older version of SEMM where we could enable it. They took this also away - so there is really now no way of fixing this!

Surface driver and firmware lifecycle for Windows-based devices - Surface | Microsoft Learn

If you look at the above page and do the math of how many years a Surface model is supported, the 11 most recent Surface devices released since 2021 have the lowest support life cycle of 4.0 years.

This is compared to older devices getting longer support such as the Surface Pro 3 getting 7.4 years of support and the Surface Pro 5 getting 6.6 years of support.

This is a trend of reducing support for Surface devices so I'll be interested to see if Microsoft will address the TPM issue before the Surface Pro 5 support ends on January 2024.

Many customers will want Windows 11 installed on their Surface Pro 5 before 2024 to extend the life of the device before Windows 10 reaches end of life in 2025.

Customers with a Surface Pro 5 with Windows 11 will probably want to hold off from upgrading till Windows 12 is released and Windows 11 reaches end of life and purchase a new Surface with support for Windows 11 and 12.

But considering the trend in the Microsoft article above and the reluctance to resolve the issue of the TPM being disabled by a firmware update, it makes me feel like Microsoft would rather sit on the issue and hope people will be pressured to upgrade early.

If you bothered to read the post properly, the TPM option is no longer present in the firmware menu. It is not present in our SP7 and others have reported the same issue SURFACE PRO 7 TPM MISSING! - Microsoft Community as of a firmware update.

Please stop trying to be the hero and read the post first.
