Another Surface Pro 4 Screen Flicker Report

Hello,

I have a Surface Pro 4-i7 16GB Ram 256GB SSD which I purchased in December 2015.

After a couple of months of use I started to get a coloured-banding issue across the screen (Video capture of the issue provided at the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loYD4ANL-yA&t=18s

).

I sent back my unit for inspection under warranty and received a replacement unit within a week. It seemed to be a refurbished unit (which was mildly frustrating, trading in a 2-month old, out of the box, new unit for refurbished), however the screen was working and it was in fairly good condition so I was happy enough. I loved the product, and it was ideal for my uses (high-performance, portable, with a great display).

Fast forward to November/December this year and I am now out of warranty, and the 2nd unit has developed a screen flicker issue.

This issue is the same issue reported on this forum:

I have captured a new video for my occurrence of this issue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLu7nABzTEo

I have been through the forums and the suggestions from the Microsoft Technical Team, none of which have worked for me:

- Check Windows Updates
- Check / Reinstalation of Display Drivers
- Check / Remove Previously known app issues causing flicker (e.g. Duet Display)
- MS Software Repair Tool
- Disable Hyper-V in windows features.
- Surface Reset

I do also appreciate that it is a difficult problem to troubleshoot, as it's an intermittent issue and there seem to have been other similar screen issues which were software related which are given as suggestions for this particular problem. All (non-microsoft) sources point to a hardware issue due to heating/High CPU.

I'm now in a position where I have tried all the suggested avenues, the issue seems fairly widespread (the main thread has 121 pages of comments of users who are experiencing the same issue), I am out of warranty, and based in the UK so there is no store to take this product to.

My only option would seem to be to pay an additional £400 and ship this device for a out-of-warranty replacement. However, considering this is already my 2nd device with a hardware screen issue, would you expect me to have the confidence that the new unit won't have or develop the same issue?

I paid a premium for this device at the time, and £400 without confidence that this issue isn't going to re-occur is a large ask.

Could you please assist advising on any other option I have which I may have missed?

Many Thanks,

Craig

Hi Craig,

Flickering screen in Windows is usually caused by an incompatible app or display driver. To determine whether an app or driver is causing the problem, check to see if Task Manager flickers. Then, based on that information, you'll need to either update the app or the display driver.

Open Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys on the keyboard at the same time. If that doesn't work, right-click the Start  button in the lower-left corner of your screen and then select Task Manager.

  • If Task Manager doesn't flicker, an app is probably causing the problem.
  • If Task Manager does flicker, a display driver is probably causing the problem.

Three apps were previously known to cause screen flickering in Windows 10: Norton AV, iCloud, and IDT Audio. In most cases, updating the app or contacting the app manufacturer for an update will fix the problem.

Here are some solutions you can help you resolve the issue:

Force shutdown your Surface

  1. Press and hold the power button for a full 10 seconds, until the screen turns off, then release the power button.
  2. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

Roll back the display adapter

  1. In the Device Manager, expand the Display adapters section, right-click the listed adapter, then select Properties.
  2. Go to the Drivers tab, click the Roll Back Driver button.

Uninstall your current display adapter, and then check for driver updates.

  1. Start your PC in safe mode, then right-click the Start  button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display adapters section, right-click the listed adapter, then select Uninstall device. Select the Delete the driver software for this device check box, then select Uninstall and restart your device.
  3. After your device restarts, press the Windows key  + I on your keyboard to open Settings. If that doesn't work, select the Start  button and then select Settings.
  4. From Settings, select Update & security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the response, however it has not helped my case.

As mentioned in my post, I have attempted a lot of the answers mentioned in the other threads relating to this issue on this forum including the force shutdown, and reinstallation of the display adapter.

When the flicker kicks in, the entire screen is affected,  including task manager (also, if you check the video you can see that even the UEFI screen shakes).

Are there any other suggestions apart from an out of warranty replacement? (I can't bring myself to pay £400 considering this is the 2nd surface pro 4 I've had which has had a screen issue (see both videos)

Thanks,

Craig

Hi Sam,

No I did not. I had to buy another computer as my primary device. If I had confidence the MS had located the issue and it wouldn't reoccur I would have bit the bullet and paid the £400 for an out-of-warranty replacement, but based on the amount of customers on this forum and on https://flickergate.com/ it was just too  much money gambling that it wouldn't reoccur in 90 days for the new unit.

Thanks,

Craig

I am facing the same issue recently after just over a year of using my Surface Pro 4. I will be contacting MS support tomorrow after trying some self help and searching online which did not work.

Hello Mark,

I have tried all these - I don't have Icloud, Norton AV, or IDT audio driver installed. I have rolled back display driver and ultimately reinstall the display driver. Nothing works. I also tried all of the options the OP stated that he tried as well.

What else do you have for me?

Jason

P.S. I hope it's a free surface replacement because I paid 1700 for mine and this happened 1.5 years into ownership.

Hi Jason,

You can run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to check for possible software issues and have them corrected. If the issue persists, we suggest that you contact the Answer Desk team or our Global Customer Service team. You can also visit the nearest local Microsoft Store to have it checked. If you are in the United States, you can set an appointment here.

Regards.

Hi Erwin,

I have already run all of the above and recently reset my surface to factory default with it still happening. I am currently in a location that does not have a microsoft store, but will be moving to an area that will have one soon. I guess my best bet is to move and then make an appointment to visit a microsoft store.

Thank you for your reply and suggestion.

Jason
