I noticed that there is a main.db file created as part of the Skype desktop installation. In examining this file in a SQLite browser, I find there are many tables but that most of them are empty - that is, they have zero rows of data. Can anyone give
me an idea of how this database is used in Skype? Was it used differently before Microsoft bought Skype?

If you have in mind the main.db file used by the
classic Skype (the 7.X version), then the answer is that all chat messages are stored in this database file in table
messages-> column: body_xml.
In the new Microsoft Skype for Windows 10 (Skype UWP) application
(the 12.X version), the chat history is no longer saved in the main.db file, but instead in the
skype.db database file. The table name is still
messages, but the column is content.
How the chat data are saved in the new Microsoft Skype for Desktop (the 8.X version), I don't know. Don't have this Skype application installed, and so cannot test.
