I find it sad that Microsoft cannot use it's own Installer properly and just wraps exe installer into msi file.

Being the same EXE blob, it still creates a desktop icon, and this is not adjustable with mst.

In fact nothing in this can be customized with mst, which is the essential idea of MSI format.

Does this exe still force users to update app before using when user has no admin privileges?

After a bit of testing this msi...

This addresses none of the problems and concerns expressed in original msi thread.

It downloads skype-setup.exe into user's appdata, just doesn't launch it if user doesn't have admin rights. But it forces admin user to update. With appdata-downloaded exe.

MSI creates own entry under Uninstall key in registry, but exe entry is still created as well.

After a forced update by exe, does this msi key get updated too?

If not, and the new version of msi is done properly it's going to have different GUID and if user with admin rights was forced to update via exe at some point, there is going to be multiple entries to the same skype under uninstall key. Happy detecting/uninstalling at that point.

So this msi is at least completely useless, possibly even harmful.

In the case of installing Skype from both the MSI and the EXE there will be two entries shown in the Uninstall UX. However, if you decide to uninstall either entry, it will remove Skype as expected.

Skype doesn't launch update if user is not an admin. But if user has admin rights, skype is still forcing an update.

Also skype downloads update package into every user appdata who uses skype (or has an autostart).

Both entries are shown. if I click to uninstall on MSI entry, it chains EXE and everything is uninstalled. At least for now, when there wasn't any update in between.

If I uninstall EXE entry however, it runs "uninst000.exe" from skype's install directory and MSI entry remains.

Since MSI isn't really associated with skype's files, it can be uninstalled afterwards.

Sorry, but does the Skype team really think anyone cares? Should we all jump into the air and applaud because now there is a new way to install a crippled app?

Any IT administrator worth his salt will never touch this and should have kept the Classic running.
