Skype with Bluetooth headset always low quality audio on headphone

Hi

I have used a wired USB headset (logitech) for over one year now. All worked without problems. I decided to upgrade to a wireless bluetooth headset.

The first one was a (cheap) one. It worked, but Windows added 2 playback devices, one with very low sample rate and bad audio and one with HiFi quality.

I was unable to have Skype playing back the audio to the hifi quality output. It was detected, but when selected it does not play any sound.

A music player, playing to the hifi device sounded quite good.

Today I bought a JBL headset ( T450BT) but that one gives the same problem.

I have audio devices JBL T450BT Handsfree and JBL T450BT Stereo.

If I playback music to the Stereo JBL the sound is excellent, but to the handsfree the sound is low bitrate with ugly compression.

But with this headphone too I can not get Skype to playback to the JBL T450T Stereo device. I can select the device in Skype but pressing the play button gives no sound in the headphone. The handsfree when selected gives sound but ugly quality.

Can anyone advice me how to get better playback quality on my JBL bluetooth headphone ?

Thanks,

Ben

Hello BenZ1964,

Welcome to Skype Community forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are getting poor audio quality from your newly bought Bluetooth headset, but if you are Having problems with poor quality, freezing, delay, or dropped calls? You, and the person you're calling should follow these steps:

1. Use the latest version of Skype.
We're always improving call quality, so for best performance, make sure that you and the person you're calling are using the latest version of Skype.
Download the latest version.

2. Check your connection.
If your audio or video calls freeze, your video looks block-like or has motion blur, it might be your internet connection (or your friend's) causing the problem. If Skype detects a weak connection, it will reduce the quality to try and stop the call from dropping altogether.

  • Using a computer? Plug your Ethernet cable directly into your modem or router. If you're using Wi-Fi, try moving closer to the router. If you're not connected, the Windows 10 guide Why can't I get online?will give you tips to fix any connection issues.

  • Using a mobile device? Use a speed test app to check the performance of your mobile connection, and check the result against the download and upload speedsrequired for Skype.

    3. Is another application interfering with your call?
Close any applications that could be interfering with your call. File sharing applications, streaming audio or video, or even just having a web browser open are all things that can eat up bandwidth.

    4. Have you tried to check if your Sound card driver is updated? If not, please do update it and then, please try to test if the audio quality got better?

Hi, i meet exactly the same problem with my plantronics voyager legend

    - every sound is OK with all application

    - in skype, in the settings i can choose two different speaker. The PLT_Legend hand-free, with really bad quality of sound. Impossible to use to understand people, and the speaker PLT_Legend stereo, with this last there is no sound !

I have the last version of skype.

    Thanks for your help

    Julien

This is due to Skype only supporting the Bluetooth  Headset Profile (low quality audio) and not the Hands-Free Profile (higher quality audio).

Here's how it was explained to my by a Bose technician:

"Bluetooth speakers support Hands-Free Profile (HFP) but not Headset Profile (HSP) for Bluetooth profiles. Skype and WhatsApp use the HSP profile specifically. For this main reason, we're unable to use our speakers with these apps."

Bose has been in the audio business forever, and they would know.

So, until Skype supports HFP, we're stuck with HSP and its lousy quality.  Of course various headsets work better than others with HSP, so some users may not recognize the difference.

This is kind of a drag, as I would dearly love to use one of Bose's BT microphone/speaker devices to perform hands-free teleconference at remote sites using only a tablet device.

And there is a growing need to get this fixed so hearing impaired users can use BT speakers as speakerphone.

Skype Business & Standard, latest ver.

Audio Realtek & Intel Bluetooth driver, latest 2018

Have the same problem. Bluetooth headset works with all apps and audio test of skype but speech and audio doesn't work during skype calling or Echo/ Sound Test Service.

Skype with Mac OS and the same bluetooth headset works fine. So what?

Switch meeting to gotomeeting or webex and things are just find.   Skype for business....its a problem.

I'm also struggling with the same issue.  My Plantronic Voyager Legend BT-headset works fine with every application but not with Skype (for business). During the test call, it's sounds acceptable (not really good) but during real calls I often get the message that my microphone causes bad audio quality and also my colleagues often ask to use different headset...

I hope Microsoft can solve this issue quickly.
