Skype Insider Release Notes for Skype 8.98.76.205

Hi Everyone,

The latest Skype Insider build 8.98 was fully released and this is what we were working on.

What’s new?

Sign-in screen refresh:

We've provided a modern touch to your sign-in screens, improving the experience when you log into your existing Skype account, across all Platforms. For an added touch of convenience, you can also Sign in with a QR code.

Seamless Bing bot integration in group chats:

The Bing bot is now auto-added next to the composer across all platforms for easy access. Click or @Bing the bot to start an interaction, which initiates a one-time consent process. Users can engage with the bot in conversation and benefit from its AI-powered insights. The bot remains available until you decide to remove it from your participants list.

Enhanced problem reporting:

We've expanded and refined the 'Report a Problem' categories across all platforms for ease of use. New options including Sign In/Sign Up, Translation & Captions, Bing & News, and more have been added to ensure we capture every detail of your experience.

Settings -> Help & Feedback -> Report a problem -> Report Category

Bing bot sharing made easy:

Showcase the power of the AI-driven Bing bot outside of Skype by easily sharing a link with friends and family on other apps or social media. The new Bing in Skype acts as your AI co-pilot, ready to provide insightful answers to your questions. From quick clarifications to more detailed information, Bing utilizes the latest AI technology to deliver real-time answers and insights.

To access it, navigate to the Bing 1:1 chat, tap/click Bing in the header, and tap/click Share Bot.

Stability improvements & Bug fixes:

  • Remote videos not rendering when other participants enabled the Together Mode on a video call on iOS

  • Skype App crashing when on Do Not Disturb mode, and the other user calls and hangs upon Android, Mac & Windows

  • Infinite spinner when adding account on Desktop

  • Bing 1:1 chat suggestions had a wrong background color in dark mode on all Platforms

  • Bing suggestions in group chats with side bar open were off on Mac

As usual, all new features are rolling out gradually over the next couple of days so if you don’t see them right away, just check again soon.

Please let us know what you think about the latest changes, either here in the community or through the Skype app. You can always go to the Skype’s User Feedback channel to submit and vote for new features and ideas.

Additionally, download the latest Skype Insider build here if you have not yet, so, you don't miss out on these Early Access features. :)

Thank you,

The Skype Team

Download link still seems to be the older build of v8.98.76.103 and not v8.98.76.201

The currently latest Skype Preview version is still 8.98.76.103, at least on computers.

Same on Android, so they jumped the gun a little bit. Probably soon. Still, it does have the all-important sign-in screen refresh.

Should be reflecting now - was held back a bit by a bug fix.

Thanks,

Do you know if the previously-mentioned x64 version will be coming to the standalone Windows version (optionally) as it has the Windows Store version? The latter is termed "MSIX" but that's just the Store packaging system: it's ultimately still a normal Windows x64 app, so making one for standalone isn't a great leap.

The Engineering team has it in their to-do list - to extend the x64 version to Windows Electron too.

Thanks,

I am really curious, as to how many people have ever requested of MS team to "provide a modern touch to my sign-in screens, improving the experience when I log into my existing Skype account, across all Platforms." It actually looks like a waste of the development resources to things nobody needs. I NEVER see this sign-in screen, besides the very first login into Skype after launching it on the brand-new system. And I am pretty confident that 99,9% of existing users can tell you the same.

I have never seen that Weather icon in the window header was mentioned in the release notes. Guess it was introduced somewhere between 8.96 and 8.97.

Is there a way to turn it off completely, as there are other ways to learn the temperature outside when I need it? Right here is seems irrelevant.

What I hate about the new version on Windows 11 is that there should be a easy way to show the current version or the about screen instead of having to click on Profile photo -> Settings -> Help & Feedback before seeing it.

Hi Yuriy,

Thank you for this feedback.

Regarding that sign-in screen redesign - the old design was causing a couple of crashes, so, the Engineering team wanted to improve this experience, while also paying attention to a more improved/modern look.

Thanks,

Irene [Skype]
