Skype for Android deleted all my phone contacts!

Hi all,

This is my first question here.

I hope that there will be a solution - otherwise I will stop using any skype!

The problem:

I am using skype for years both on phone and PC.

Two weeks ago I realized that I can't call anyone - because when I open contacts on my phone (Sony XPeria XZ3) the only thing I can do is a Skype call.

Once I realized that Skype is "stealing" my contacts I decided to uninstall Skype from my mobile.

And this was a HUGE mistake.

As a result all my contacts where deleted - from my phone address book.

I thought there is no need to panic - since my contacts are kept in gmail too BUT this was not true any more.

Skype have deleted my contacts from google too.

:(((((((((((((((((((((((((

Hundreds of contacts have been lost for ever.

Then I discovered an old csv export of my contacts and imported it in gmail, then all contacts appeared in my phone.

So far, so good.

This worked for few days - and then again Skype noticed I have contacts and took ownership (phone calls not possible, viber started complaining that contacts are missing).

The result - again all contacts were deleted from my phone and gmail.

I see no other solution - then to NOT USE skype on my mobile any more.

I wanted to "unlink" the Skype and Gmail accounts. Looked arround and could not find how to do that. I have not connected them - at least not

I revoked permissions to access Contacts from Skype for Android.

This is my story. I have only 3 contacts in my phone ;(

Any advice is welcome.

Kind Regards,

Annie

Where did you installed the Skype from?

Did you installed it from Google Play?

Skype won't delete contacts so I guess it might be different issue.

In addition, Skype and Google Account are not Sync.

You mention Skype stealing contact, would you mind explain that? Did you see any abnormal behavior in Skype?

Hello,

I Installed Skype from Google Play.

Skype worked normally.

When I open a contact from the phone's address book - the contact's data looked strange. No phone number, no any data beside their Skype. When I click on a contact I get the option to make a Skype call.

When I Uninstaller Skype then all contacts disappeared from my address book. Then I  check Gmail and they miss there too.

This is weird behavior but I don't think Skype is causing this issue, it won't delete your contacts.

Are you using the latest version of Android?

I think it's the latest Android 9 (Updated on 01.August.2019).

Yesterday I imported again all contacts and revoked any permission from Skype to access the contacts.

So far the contacts are there.

I'm nervous to uninstall Skype as it is warning that it will delete the contacts it stole from my Samsung Galaxy S®6 phone.

All historical calls, texts (including pictures) from contacts that it stole are gone.  I haven't even used Skype in years; I didn't update it voluntarily and I don't have auto update.

Advice please?

1. Create a backup of your contacts. I recommend to create a .csv file (Samsung -> Gmail -> Export to csv).

2. Revoke permissions from Skype to access your contacts.

Once I revoked all permissions from Skype to access my phone, the contacts remained OK.
