profile picture is sideways even though it isn't sideways in file explorer

Skype profile image are uploading sideways (sometimes to the left, sometimes to the right). The image source in the file explorer is not sideways. I tried even turning the image source file to *be* sideways, to see if Skype would turn it the right way at that point, but the image still showed up sideways.
Hello copi8,

You would need to go to the source file for the picture in File Explorer then rotate it there.

Launch File Explorer on the Task bar
Browse to where the file picture is located

Right click it
Click Rotate clock wise or counter clock wise until the picture in corrected.

If the problem persists, please don't hesitate to reply so I may help you further.

I hope this helped!
Victor

You could also do a work around by rotating it the opposite way in an image editing app, then save it and upload. It should then rotate the right way.

I hope this helped!

Are you kidding me? Did you read what I wrote at all? This question has gone through Microsoft support multiple times; just Google it, and other threads will show up where you people keep telling us to go to the source file in File Explorer and rotate it there.

Can you go ahead and read what I actually wrote?!? Or should I just quote it here for you so you actually read it: "The image source in the file explorer is not sideways. I tried even turning the image source file to *be* sideways, to see if Skype would turn it the right way at that point, but the image still showed up sideways."

So, yeah, I tried editing the source file's orientation. Obviously. I'm not an idiot, so stop treating me like one.

I do not recall having any issues with updating my profile picture. I currently do not have access to Skype from my location to test anything. In regards to orientation issues:

Try loading the image in Microsoft Paint, ensuring the orientation is correct there. You can also check the properties of the image and ensure the EXIF tag is set to the same orientation. A lot of times, programs may not actually rotate the image, they will simply adjust the EXIF tag, to rotate it. If the tag is not read or is stripped, the image will retain its original orientation. If the issue is due to the dimensions, you can also try shrinking/resizing the image or modifying the aspect ratio to see if that changes anything.

Thank you for actually reading my question and responding appropriately. Unlike some people.

In File Explorer, reading the data says the dimensions are 2448 x 3264. The width is shorter, the height is longer. This corresponds with the correct orientation of the photo (it should be portrait, and File Explorer shows it as portrait). Skype, however, keeps trying to show this as a landscape photo, showing my face sideways.

Could this still be an EXIF issue, even though the dimensions are correctly attributed in the properties?

If it is an EXIF issue...is there any way to make it so File Explorer will show the sideways photos as sideways, instead of correctly orienting them but not carrying over to Skype? Should I use something like Adobe Lightroom or something like that?

(And...side comment...if I do have to use Adobe, why do I have to use a non-Windows program to fix an issue of communication between two Windows programs?)

I created a file those exact dimensions. When I added an EXIF orientation value to the file and uploaded it, it adhered to that orientation. When I right clicked on the file and chose rotate right or rotate left, that was the same orientation that was presented in Skype. I suggest rotating it in explorer a few times to see how it orients every time you upload the picture in Skype. Possibly the changes will sync properly through those attempts. You can also remove the photo in Skype, prior to updating the modified one.
