Hi, Gary

Please allow Skype to use your microphone from your computer's privacy settings by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Start, then select Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
  2. Choose your preferred setting for Let apps use my microphone.
  3. Under Choose apps that can use your microphone, turn on for Skype.

Let me know the result.

you are doomed.  I went through "accounts" and "Pay bills" so I could access text chat -- that's the only way to get to chat -- and 2 different Microsoft techs spent 2 hours today testing my mic stuff, reconfiguring all sorts of stuff,  and then first reinstalling Classic Skype (Sarah) and then Mike says Classic won't work with 10.  He finally said "your mic is working" -- which it was for everything but Skype -- and essentially hun up on me, presumably because as a Microsoft dude he had soled the problem for my machine but not Skype. If you had a different later experience let me know

Classic Skype works well with Windows 10.

Few days ago, Microsoft has removed download links to the classic Skype from the main Skype download page. However, the installer links are still available on their servers. You can use this link to install the classic Skype for Windows Desktop:

Have wasted hours because last windows 10 update made changes in my settings without my knowledge.  One of them was that it changed the microphone privacy access to my Skype, which, in turn, made it impossible for me to either make calls or listen to my various cell phone and land line voice mail messages.

I long ago came to fear both MS Win 10 AND Skype updates for the reason they have too often wrecked havoc on my various computers, causing me to lose valuable time trying to resolve these problems, all of which were caused by taking the latest updates.

I loved the old Skype before it was taken over by MS and drastically (over time) changed.  Now when I want to make a phone call using my paid subscription, it looks so different (from v 7.4 to latest 8.23.0.10) that I am both lost and confused, therefore, once again wasting time trying to learn where my contacts went and how to get them to appear right at the start.

It's taken me 6 hours of normal work time, I don't have today, just to finally discover this solution of resetting the update change in my privacy setting (for my audio/microphone).

The basic idea of computers is to save time, but this sort of wanton disregard for first thoroughly proving and debugging changes for updates before dispersing them is more than counterproductive.  My friends with Apple computers keep telling me to switch because they don't have these incessant annoying and time-wasting issues.

Please notify management that this issue of problem-causing updates is very serious.

Thank you.

May be a silly question. Have you tried loading Skype and checking settings? I am finding that Speaker and Microphone settings have a tendency to disappear.

Thanks for the help.  I finally gave up and went to older version of Skype, which I strongly prefer, anyway.  Have beeen exhausted fussing with many bugs and/or loss of fine features when Skype updates . . . . have even had major crashed in both Win 7 and 10 from Skype updates.  Scary.

I attempted the referenced fix but since the update, 8.29.0.50, Skype does not appear in the list of microphone privacy apps and therefore cannot be "turned on."  This is a major issue, rendering Skype virtually unusable at this time.  Please advise.

Thank you.

Victor

Privacy settings apply only to Skype UWP (Microsoft Skype for Windows 10, the 12.X version)

Click on the 3 dots ("...") button and select Settings -> Audio & Video. What device is selected there for your Microphone?
