"Loose contact" between Skype and PulseAudio: crackling audio in call

Hey guys!

I've been experiencing this issue over the past months, it comes and goes. About 50% of my Skype calls using Skype for Linux Preview are ok, the other 50% aren't. The audio is pretty much broken: in pavucontrol, Skype flashes rapidly as a playback device, and you can hear in this video what that does to the call:

https://youtu.be/-lGUg5QEv-o

This is regardless of whether I use my laptop's built-in audio hardware (mic and speakers), the Microsoft LifeChat 3000 USB headset, or an analogue mic connected on my desktop PC with audio going to my home theater receiever through HDMI.

Has anybody else experienced this? Are you aware of a solution or workaround?

Skype version 8.9.76.63042
Calling version 2017.21.01.23

(EDIT: I also tried submitting this as a bug using the "Report a Problem" option, but the bot seemed confused by what I was trying to say. Does anybody know if Microsoft saves our feedback in bug reports and whether we can somehow follow up on what they're doing with them?)

Hi Matthias,

The most common reason why Skype users experience audio issues is because of having a poor Internet connection. If Skype detects a weak connection, it will reduce the quality to try and stop the call from dropping altogether. Kindly test the performance of your mobile connection, and compare the result against the download and upload speeds required for Skype to properly work.

I also suggest you to try using another Internet connection source for testing purposes.

Please let me know what the result will be.

Hi, Jomel!

Thanks for your response and suggestion. My Internet connection speed is as follows:

As you can see in the video in my original post, looking at pavucontrol in Ubuntu while running Skype Preview, it seems there is some issue between Skype and Ubuntu's audio architecture. In the "Playback" tab, Skype flickers as a playback device, and this flickering translates to the stuttering/crackling audio you hear in the video.

It's hard to tell without being a developer, of course, but I'm suspecting that the issue could lie somewhere between Skype and Pulse Audio, or Skype and ALSA.

My Steps to Reproduce:

1. Run Skype Preview on Ubuntu

2. Run Pavucontrol and select "Playback" tab

3. Start a Skype call while monitoring Pavucontrol

Repro Rate:

About 50%

Test System:

Asus ROG G751JY Laptop

Ubuntu GNOME 17.04, 64-bit

Already tried it on 3 computers, I'm afraid it's a problem with Skype and pulseaudio, as adriaticc suggested above as well.

I doubt this issue can be resolved by a live chat representative. This is a bug which needs to reach the eyes of a developer. How can we do that?
