high cpu usage in Skype for Linux (also after a call) (version: 8.53.0.85)

Hi everyone!

In the last version of Skype for Linux (version 8.53.0.85, released more or less two weeks ago) I have the following problem. The CPU usage during a video call is very high, so high that the fan activates during the call all the time. Moreover, after a call the CPU usage remains high (unchanged) and the fan remains active. The only solution is to restart Skype.

I also deleted the folder $HOME/.config/skypeforlinux, but nothing relevant changed.

Let me also add that previous version of Skype for Linux did not have this problem.

Does anyone have the same problem?

Operating system is Linux Mint 19.2 Tina.

Thank you for your answers!

Hello rubenw.25 ,

Thank you for reaching out to the community!

I also would like to ask for additional logs that our engineering team would need to investigate this further. I sent you a private message which contains instructions on how you can provide us the logs using the preview version of the Skype app. You may view the message through your inbox using this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessage/inbox?tm=1574859211375

I look forward to your response.

Hi SebastianNada ,

Thank you for posting in the community!

I would like to suggest installing the Skype Preview app and let me know if you will experience the same issue with the performance. You can download Skype preview through this link: https://www.skype.com/en/insider/

Based on your description, you mentioned that you are using a Linux device that has a distribution of Mint 19.2. I'd like to give a head's up that Mint is not yet fully compatible with Skype. This is the possible reason why you are experiencing such issues.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi there.

Skype version 8.55.0.123

Ubuntu Mate 19.10 x64

Same issue. After video call or screenshare from remote site Skype uses 100% of single cpu core. Restarting Skype solves this issue until next video call.

Thank,

Mikhail.

microsoft never helps in such cases, wasting CPU is their official strategy as many corps have. I suggest to add renice script to slower down all skypeforlinux processes.

rm -rf ~/.config/skypeforlinux/Cache/*

I too had this problem on Ubuntu 18.04 and the above fixed my problem. Thank you!

EDITed to add: my Skype was unusable before I did the above.
