Crackling noise on Skype (and Discord)

Hey all,

yesterday it was brought to my attention that my microphone has recently started making clicking noises on Skype and Discord. When I use recording programmes, either online or locally, these noises do not occur. Drivers are up to date, sound settings have never been changed, microphone is proven to be OK. Repair approaches I found on youtube, such as assigning only one core to the audiodg.exe service, did not lead to any success.

The microphone is connected via USB and worked perfectly a while ago and continues to do so except for skype and discord.

I hope someone can give me a tip on how to solve this problem - thank you very much.

Hi. I'm Kleber. Independent consultant and Skype user. I'm sorry for what's happening and I'm happy to be able to help you. At first I suggest that you uninstall and reinstall Skype again. Then make the settings below: Check your privacy settings. You can follow the steps below.

Go to Start and select Settings.

Choose Privacy - Microphone.

Choose your preferred setting for Allow apps to use my microphone .

In Choose apps that can use your microphone , activate Skype.

Test on Skype if you can hear yourself now.

If that doesn't work try checking this other sound setting: right-click the "Sound" icon in your computer's task tray, and select "Recording Devices".

Click Computer's Standard Microphone. This is the device with a checkmark next to it.

Click on the "Properties" button and navigate to the "Levels" tab.

Slide the setting for "Microphone Boost" all the way to the left to disable it. This setting reduces microphone boost sound and decreases noise sensitivity.
Last but not least I suggest you to test the online version of Skype and see if the problem persists. Let me know if this helped.

Hello T&&&,

Thank you for reaching out to the community!

In addition to kleberBuzzoni's response, since it is both happening on Discord and Skype, it is possible that the problem is on the headset itself. You could try to use a different application and see if the same would persist. You could also try to check your sound settings as presented by kleberBuzzoni. I recommend that you try to use a different headset or use the built in microphone if there are any on your device and test if you would experience the same issue.

Let us know if you have further questions or clarifications.
