Answer

Online security is a function of several things, with consideration needed for all.  To answer your question, you need to understand what product(s) are being used, and how.

A well-protected platform consists of:

·         A fully updated Operating System (including service packs), with Automatic Update ON.

·         Updated Third Party Applications (Java, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, etc)

·         MSE installed for complete anti-malware protection

·         Internet Explorer 8 default security settings (Reset all zones to default level), with SmartScreen Filter ON, and Pop-Up Blocker ON.  For a report on browser security, go to http://nsslabs.com/browser-security )

·         Windows Firewall ON

·         User Account Control (UAC) ON (Vista and Windows 7), and not running with elevated privileges

Each of these bullets is important.  All of them working together is important.

So, will Security Essentials protect your online banking and shopping?  Yes.

If you choose to use Security Essentials, please follow the steps in this thread first, especially the part about removing all existing realtime antimalware:

And, this setup is how I handle all of my online banking, shopping, and ebay.
