My PC infected with search protect conduit

I've just found search protect conduit in my start-up manager (removed it via add/remove) but is it spyware? Don't know where it came from. Have Googled this question but varying answers as to whether it is some form of malware and how it was installed

[Original Title: search protect conduit]

Yes, you should remove it.

It is a browser hijack in that it changes your home page and search provider. This component insures that any changes made to the search provider subsequently will revert back to Conduit.

It is malware, a browser hijacker. It has spyware elements, but it is not spyware. Hijackers are more similar to adware : the information they collect are for marketing and advertisement purposes usually, but not for stealing sensitive data and misusing it. Are they dangerous? well, their search results are poor and advertisements might include more serious malware.
Conduit is installed together with freeware/shareware programs : MP3 rippers, youtube downloaders, etc. Some trojans distribute it as well.
