Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 64 Bit Won't Update

When I try to update virus and spyware definitions I receive error code 0x80072f8f - the definition updates couldn't be installed, please try again later. I am connected to the internet. Any solutions out there?

Sometimes a reboot helps. Restart your computer, wait 10 minutes and then see what Defender says.

Try manually downloading the definitions from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates

Try run Windows Update and see if you are able to download and install updates.

You could get the latest Windows Defender update through Windows Update.

As I have already said it WILL NOT UPDATE, the green loading line goes along as far as the letter, d in definitions ?? or says no connection. some times I get a warning and it does go all the way along but still does NOT install.

Smeed, thank you for your help. I was able to manually update the virus definitions; however they will not automatically update. I’ve run the patches several times, rebooted numerous times, and when I open Windows Defender and try to update definitions there I get the same code saying it cannot update. Sorry for replying so long after your response, but I wanted to be able to use it and see if it would begin updating after trying the fixes several times. Any other suggestions you have would be appreciated.

First off, it's good to know that you were able to manually update. At least, that's something positive ;)

I don't really have any other ideas...

It might be that it's somehow a problem on the Microsoft side. It wouldn't be the first time....

Perhaps they are already working on something.... I do not know.

Let's see if the moderator

who posted yesterday already, comes back to this thread today and can offer some other ideas...

Cheers,

Smeed.

Hi Vicki,

Please check to see that the Date & Time are set correctly on your PC.

I am pretty sure that Smeed may already have presented you with the solution

to your problem. However, it may have been lost in the minutia.

If you have not already tried resetting Windows Update, do the following.

One caveat: This will clear your "update history". The Updates are not affected.

Click "start" and type "CMD". Then select "Run as administrator".

On the Command Prompt (admin) screen, enter the following commands.

one at a time, and hit <enter> after each.

Net Stop Wuauserv     <enter>

Net Stop Cryptsvc       <enter>

Net Stop Bits               <enter>

Net Stop Msiserver     <enter>

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old  <enter>

Ren C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old     <enter>

Net Start Wuauserv     <enter>

Net Start Cryptsvc       <enter>

Net Start Bits               <enter>

Net Start Msiserver     <enter>

Exit     <enter>

Restart your PC

Windows will rebuild the folders, minus any corruption that existed.

If corruption did exist, the definitions should update OK now.

Good luck,  Glen

Glen, thank you for posting these instructions again, your are correct, I did not see them in an earlier post from Smeed. The date and time are correct on my PC and I tried the fix you indicated above; I'll check Defender in a couple days and see if it has automatically updated.

Thank you, tried that, but it still will not automatically update. I ran the commands Glen recommended and will check my computer in a couple days to see if Defender has automatically updated.
