Hello,

I cannot use my windows defender because of an error code. I also cannot troubleshoot. It always says, there is something stopping it from running. Anyhow, the error code for windows defender is 0X800106ba.   Thanks

If you have any other anti-virus program on you're computer you Must completely Remove it or Windows Defender will Not turn on and work.

Hi,

Do NOT follow the advice that you have been given to remove your Anti-Virus.

___________________________________________________

Windows Defender in XP, Vista and Windows 7 is an Anti-Spyware Program, not an Anti-Virus Program, and uninstalling your Anti-Virus Program would leave your Computer mostly unprotected.

Microsoft changed Windows Defender in Windows 8 to be an Anti-Virus, but NOT in Windows 7

___________________________________________________

Read this Information about Anti-Virus Programs and Windows Defender in Windows 7.

If you are using Norton, AVG, Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, etc the default action is for Windows Defender to be disabled, as those AntiVirus Programs have their own Antispyware Applications.

It is nothing to be worried about.

Using the two Programs at the same time can cause System conflicts, etc.

If you wish to have extra protection against Malware use the FREE version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

And to now change Startup Programs in Windows 7 without using Defender, use either of these Methods:

"How to use MSCONFIG in Windows 7"

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_win7.html

Or the FREE Autoruns Program:

"Autoruns for Windows v11.21"

Cheers.

Defender in windows 7/vista is not a complete antivirus.. Its just an anti spyware software.. So it is not recommended to disable your antivirus that will make your pc vulnerable to malware attacks.

Hetti,

When you move a Thread kindly put where you moved it from.

The OP does not state their Operating System in the Thread.

But I replied to their Question as it was in the Windows 7 Security or System Forum, so I had to assume it was a Windows 7 System.

And that was why I gave the Windows 7 advice about Anti-virus Programs and Windows Defender:

"Do NOT follow the advice that you have been given to remove your Anti-Virus.

OK Hetti,

You and I know where it came from :)

Why I mentioned posting where you moved it from is because if it, or any other Threads, were moved here with no replies already posted to it, anyone seeing it would have to ask "what Windows version are you using?" because of the XP/Vista Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 difference.

I post a message where it came from in every Thread I move; I picked up that habit from one of the other CMs; Don I think..

It is builtin now :)

Happy Computing :)

Bill.

Hello,

Sorry it took soo long, but I'm in school and have kids. Anyhow, I don't have any antivirus currently, just what windows has and there are no start up error messages. I did have Kaperskey, but it ended and they want money to keep it. Only when I try to open windows defender and when I try to troubleshoot is this error message come up.

Thanks

If you uninstalled Kapersky, you have no antivirus on Windows 7. Defender is only antispyware.

You need to install and antivirus program and to do that you will likely need to fully remove Kaspersky *and* you will need to insure that the PC is free from viruses.

Use the Kaspersky removal tool:

http://support.kaspersky.com/1464

Then scan the PC with some tools:

Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Try Hitman Pro Trial Version: http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
This program may be run from a flash drive.

Try TDSS Killer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-tdss-tdl3-alureon-rootkit-using-tdsskiller
TDSS Killer may be run from a flash drive.

Try adwcleaner: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

Try Malwarebytes Antimalware (free version, do not install the trial or Pro version) - http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

Once you've determined that the PC is not infected, proceed to install an antivirus program of your choosing. Note that many will disable Defender to prevent a conflict since many also include antispyware.

The Kaspersky subscription may have expired but Kaspersky is still protecting your Computer up to the expiry date, but may be allowing Malware to enter your Operating System that was released after the Kaspersky expiry date.

Kaspersky is still running and may/may not cause problems with stopping Windows Defender starting in Windows 7 (you originally posted this in Windows 7 Forums)

Chances are Kaspersky (new versions) will disable Defender for you.

As Kaspersky is expired, uninstall it (you have to) and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

You NEED an Antivirus to be installed AND up to date as Windows Defender is an AntiSpyware Program in Windows 7, not an Antivirus

How to download Microsoft SecurityEssentials...

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Defender does not work with Microsoft Security Essentials.

It is nothing to be worried about as MSE has its own versiion of Windows Defender as part of its programming.

Using the two Programs at the same time can cause System conflicts, etc.

Also scan for Malware, as that may be causing you problems:

Download, install, update and scan your System with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware and if necessary do this in Safe Mode with Networking:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

"Advanced startup options (including safe mode)"

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode#1TC=windows-7

And also Scan with the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition is 100% Free and will detect and remove thousands of Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, KeyLoggers, Dialers, Hi-Jackers, and Worms. SUPERAntiSpyware features many unique and powerful technologies and removes spyware threats that other applications fail to remove.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition does not include real-time blocking or scheduled scanning.

______________________________________

Ths is a very good Program to scan your System to remove Adware, etc:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

AdwCleaner is a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers from your computer.  By using AdwCleaner you can easily remove many of these types of programs for a better user experience on your computer and while browsing the web.
