Pop Up Claims "Zeus Virus Detected"....and Error Code 0x80070015...

A "System Protection Support.." window, supposedly from Microsoft, popped up on my computer and another, smaller window popped up on top of that first screen announcing "This site says..." then "ZEUS VIRUS DETECTED-YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN BLOCKED" (The caps are exactly as appeared in the box, not mine.) The warning continues: "Error: Virus - Trojan Backdoor Hijack #365838d7f8a4fa5 IP:  Browser:Chrome    ISP: Att  Internet Services"  Then, I'm asked to call a number immediately for a "computer system technician" and "Please do not ignore this safety alert. Your Microsoft System Has Been Compromised. If you close this page before calling us your computer access will be disabled to prevent further damage and your data from being stolen." I have entered the content of the message as it came to me, capital letters and the rest.

Last night, I dialed the number they gave me and it did nothing but ring a lot before clicking the way phones do just before the dial tone starts and you are hung up.  Then I found another number for Microsoft and spoke to a very nice lady who couldn't help me directly, but suggested a couple of options north of $99.00 and a third option of contacting you. That sounded good to me. So, is there anyone out there who might know how I can fix this blood pressure raising irritant? Oh, and I forgot: I went to my Windows Defender and got a little window saying "The scan couldn't be started. The device is not ready." The error code is 0x80070015 which was noted on that same message from Windows Defender. I can't close the Defender box or the message box. What should I do?

I appreciate any help you might offer. Thanks!

Glad you did not allow the scammers to access your computer...

See Beware of Phony Tech Support Scams

Did you close the browser (using Task Manager if necessary)? Often that will eliminate the issue. Occasionally you may need to just do a hard shutdown (power off) and then restart the computer. When you open the browser again do NOT restore the previous browsing session.

Any new browser extensions that need to be disabled/removed?

You may want to scan with the Emsisoft Emergency Kit (a free program): http://blog.emsisoft.com/2015/06/09/how-to-find-and-clean-malware-infections-with-emsisoft-emergency-kit/ If necessary boot into Safe Mode to download the scanner or use another computer, put the EEK file on a flash drive and insert the flash drive in the infected computer...you can run the scanner from the flash drive.  Other scanners that may help with this issue are listed in List of Malware Removal Tools
