Windows Defender shows more no. of files scanned than actually scanned

hi

i have a Windows 10 Home system with the following Windows Defender configuration:

Antimalware Client Version: 4.10.14393.0
Engine Version: 1.1.13407.0
Antivirus definition: 1.235.126.0
Antispyware definition: 1.235.126.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 2.1.12706.0
Network Inspection System Definition Version: 116.72.0.0

My client says that Word files sent from my laptop have virus issues, but my laptop cant trace any virus

But If i run a scan on 33 files for example, the result shows that 520 files have been scanned. I do not know but the reason

Does that mean that my laptop has virus issues that cant be traced by defender? pl clarify

Sometimes, when you scan files, it will also scan dependence processes and other folders.

This doesn't mean that it has infection.

Please explain a bit about your issue, may be someone gained access to your email and try to contact your email provider and change your password.

Thanks for the quick reply - i have MS Word files on my laptop which are being scanned .. so its not about anyone accessing my mail

The Word files sent to my client have virus issues they say, but at our end there are no issues, except for the no. of files

Even if i select 1 file for scanning, it still shows 17 items scanned..

Acc. to client there are virus issues due to macros and security settings - the virus embedded in the macros get activated at clients end they claim .. but they havent mentioned any specific virus/error message/file with issues

They are working on a Mac system

i wonder if the issues are at my end or theirs

This can happen. A file can be a package of several other files. For example, when you save your word file, the document, the pictures, videos, audio and other details are wrapped up into a single file (DOCX file). So, when you scan that DOCX file, all its components get scanned. I scanned a single PPTX I made and it showed it scanned 168 files!

I am no expert of Mac but I can say that a malware working in Windows won't work on Mac (and vice versa).

I would recommend you to scan your word files on VirusTotal.

Thank you for clarification, do you have Marco inside your Word files?

When there is a Marco, Word will show a warning and that is normal and it is for security reason, may be they though this message is a virus.

I have seen Microsoft Office files created inside Windows and send to MacOS or vice versa, might have some differences, but try send it to another PC running Windows and see whether it has same issue.
