MSE update error code 0x80248015

I have been using MSE for some time. It displays a message similar to the following when updates are run:

  • Error Code: 0x80248015 Error description: Security Essentials couldn't install the definition updates. Please try again later.
  • Update failed. Security Essentials could not check virus and spyware definition updates.
  • Check your Internet or network connection and try again.
  • Click help for more information.

By visiting help pages I followed the instructions applicable to my OS which is Windows XP (SP3). Instructions were to Start -> Run -> services.msc -> Enter ->, and then right-click Automatic Updates and then click Start. If Start is unavailable, click Restart.

I followed the above step but the problem is still there.


Can you actually go to Windows Update and select Check for Updates? Never mind the AU for the moment...

You can manually download the (large file with engine and full definitions) latest definitions from the portal here:

You might try -

Reset the Windows Update components - - run the FixIt to reset the Windows update components. if that fails to work, contact MSE Support.
