This update from Microsoft brings the MSE anti-malware client version to 4.10.205.0.  It's waiting to be installed on my Win 7.  It’s a program upgrade – might include a new scanning engine.

The occasional "fake" MSE alert/notices are typically tech support scam popups...they're not listed in the Microsoft Update cache.  Here’s a sample of one in this thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/pop-up-warning-that-system-is-badly-infected/5d6b7f11-a52a-4b58-bcc7-a3c19d441c57

I came across the same question so I went to a Microsoft support chat. The reason there is next to no info showing on this is because the update is for the Chinese language version and if you have multi-language packs installed it will present it to you.

Here is a link you can run through Google Translate:

No need to worry but still the first time I've come across this happening.

That update (no, it’s not a malware issue – it’s a Microsoft issue) now seems to be causing a problem…I suggest you don’t install it till MS fixes it.  See https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/individual-file-scan-option-not-available/a1f4ba69-4735-4618-9b23-82acf3701247

If you’ve already installed it, MS will probably fix it in a few days…if not you can uninstall/reinstall MSE (which is what I'll do if necessary).

And we wonder why MS Updates are getting more and more difficult for Win 7 and Vista computers?

Methinks the MMPC or someone at MS dropped the ball again....

Thanks all for your helpful comments!

Unfortunately I have already installed the update on my laptop which never had the trojan attack I spoke of - no adverse affect noticed as yet but I have not run a scan, will try tomorrow.

I will hold off installing on my PC as I think its been through enough lately :)

Kind Regards.............

Many thanks to all for your adivice and comments, glad I asked!

The laptop is now restored to the earlier version with windows update telling me about the new update again which I will ignore for now and hope Microsoft release a new version that works but will certainly check back before installing. It did have another update as well for Malicious software removal tool (KB890830) which I reinstalled.

Functionality has returned enabling me to scan individuel files again!

As for the PC I will just keep the update unchecked in the update list!

Kind Regards.....
