Even though it lets me run a scan, when I attempt to update Microsoft security essentials it keeps generating this code. (0xc80003fe) Any help to this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks

What are your definitions version?  Mine are 1.155.1282.0 released at 1:19 AM CST on August, 1, 2013.

Are Windows Updates working?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/971058?p=1 - run the FixIt to reset the Windows update components.

If this is a recent install see the following:

Prior Security Software?   What about a trial version of an antivirus program that was pre-installed when the computer was purchased? McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro?  If you reformatted/reinstalled the operating system did you also reinstall a trial version of a security program?

Sometimes remnants of prior security software will suddenly cause issues with your current antimalware program.

A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC.  Be sure you have removed  all other security software from the PC.

You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

You may need to uninstall/reinstall MSE.

You should be able to remove MSE from Control Panel.  Any problems uninstalling see: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4

Recommend you reboot the computer to ensure the uninstall is complete.

You can download a new MSE Installation File from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201
