MSE claims that Windows did not pass genuine validation.

Microsoft Security Essentials installed fine and works.

The issue is that upon reboot I get a message saying that Windows did not pass genuine validation and that Security Essentials will become disabled in 30 days.
Going online to resolve gives me the "Welcome to Windows!  Because you have a vaild copy..." page.

Clicking the Validate link in MSE returns it to the 'Security Essentials is monitoring your computer and helping to protect it' state.

This would be acceptable for a personal machine, but I'm deploying this station out to our warehouse and I don't want them to have to deal with this.

Things I have tried:

  • Ran the MGADiag.exe program, which verified Windows is genuine with no problems.

  • Gave the data.dat file full permissions for the 'Everyone' user.  From this thread.

  • Gave same permissions to the MsseWat.dll and LegitLib.dll in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\ as suggested in this other thread.

  • I have uninstalled (from command prompt with /u) and reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials.

  • I ran a full Malwarebytes Antimalware scan with no results.

More information:
This is a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro SP3 that I installed a week ago.
I have the C:\ drive locked down with Windows SteadyState, though the problem persisted when I uninstalled Disk Protection.

What can I try next?

Ideally you would have installed MSE or another AV app within 15 minutes of first connecting the computer to the internet upon completing the clean install. Yes, before you checked for & installed any Windows Updates (including Services Packs & IE upgrades). That being said, I'm somewhat concerned that neither KB2598479, KB2631813 nor KB2585542 have been installed - especially if KB975562 & KB980436 aren't installed either.

The above notwithstanding and assuming you did NOT use the discs that came with the Lenovo computer to do the clean install, give the following a shot:

[You may want to print these instructions for offline reference. If a Step says to reboot, reboot!]

1. Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults: Select (tick) the CUSTOM [<=Important!] configuration option then click on the downward-pointing arrows on the extreme right  | Browser: Select "Internet Explorer" here (not "Use my current...").


If you go back to double-check the setting after completing #1 above, it'll be "Use my current..." but now it'll be "pointing" to IE so you don't need to change anything or re-do the setting. [Think about it.]

2. Now check your settings here: IE Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Default web browser: If the Make default button is NOT greyed out, click/press it.

3a. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop: [1]

3b. Double-click on the file you saved in #11a above & accept the prompt to MERGE the data with the Registry.

4. Reboot.

5. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to & run the Fix It.

6. IMPORTANT - DON'T SKIP THIS STEP! => Open Internet Explorer (only!) to and run the automated troubleshooter from start to finish. [2]

7. Reboot once more.

8. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to | Select CUSTOM and scan | See if you can install any/all security updates offered now (e.g., KB2598479, KB2631813 & KB2585542).

=> If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software updates category on the left-hand side of the scan results window, install it to take full advantage of IE8's enhanced security.

=> If an MSE Definitions update is listed (possibly in the Optional Software updates category on the left-hand side of the scan results window), see if you can install it as well.

Tip: Do NOT install any other Optional Software updates or any Optional Hardware updates.

9. Reply to this post with a status report.
