Q: Conflicting info between Microsoft Essentials and Windows Security Center This thread is locked from future replies

Windows Security Center states "Virus Protection" is off, however Microsoft Windows Essential states "Real Time Protection is "ON".  The "Red" shield is on my start bar but the Micosoft Essentials house is "Green".  This seems to conflict, which is correct?  Is protection ON as Essentials states, or is is OFF as Windows Security states?  I am running XP.  Thank you.

Suggest you run the eicar test file and be sure MSE is working but I'm guessing MSE is working correctly and the "misread" involves Security Center:

You can test MSE on the eicar file here: http://www.rexswain.com/eicar.html

If MSE will not alert to eicar please let us know.  So far I cannot reproduce this issue on any of my XP or Vista computers (don't have access to a Win 7) and I'd like to know myself.
