how to remove "chitka" popups

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for protecting my computer for a few years successfully.  But recently I am getting popups with the word "Chitka" that i cannot remove with clicking, which opens a new window that says "Find Gala" then closing that window.

I am also getting some pornographic type popups recently, that at least have an "x" and let me delete them.

How do I get rid of these without causing additional problems.

thanks

There’s absolutely no need to uninstall MSE in order to run the Safety Scanner.

1+ Nor MSS would detect this threat same as MSE didn't.

@Susan:
Here you have an automated Fix it to reset the Hosts file back to the default, as suggested by Jessy above.
Then, you may use adware remover AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free-Edition only!) to complete the removal of any leftovers or other possible malicious files.

Remove Chitka from your system
  1. Open My Computer and click Local Disk.
  2. Go to Windows folder and open System32.
  3. Click open drivers folder and then open etc folder.
  4. Open hosts file with Notepad.
  5. If you use Windows XP, there should be one line at the end of your hosts file: 127.0.01 localhost. If you use Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 there should be two lines at the end of the file: 127.0.01 local host and ::11 localhost.
  6. If you see any other lines below the two described above, delete them and save changes.
