Question

Q: Event ID 5000

I am getting Error Event ID 5000 MP sample submission, Mp telemetry about 2 - 10 times a month. This has been going on for many months. Reports on this forum suggest that this is normal due to Microsoft Security Essentials detecting possible hazards. Question 1. Why classify it as an error if it is part of normal behaviour. Question 2. It sounds a good theory but how can I verify that this is the case

Yes, it is the same computer as in the previous thread. This reported that I was getting System errors Event ID 10010. I am still getting these errors at a rate of between 1 and 10 a month. However, they are not occurring at the same times as the current problem with Application errors Event ID 5000 and do not seem to be related.

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply - preferablywithout quoting my post:

1a. Was Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) originally offered & installed via Windows Update or did you intentionallychoose to install it?

1b. In Windows Explorer [WinKey+E], navigate to & right-click on

    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client <=this folder

Select Properties: What is the Created date displayed on the resulting General tab?

1c. What ANTIMALWARE CLIENT version is currently installed? To find out, open MSE & click on the downward-pointing arrow to the right of HELP then select ABOUT SECURITY ESSENTIALS.

2. What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE, was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed MSE?

3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?

4a. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

4b. Was it a brand-new computer or a used computer when you got it?

5. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the Name option in the Sort by box on the right. Now scroll down & tell me if ALL of the following updates are listed?

   (a) KB2761465, KB2753842 [and/or KB2753842-v2], KB2779030, KB2758857, KB2770660 & KB2757638 or KB2758694;

   (b) KB2727528; KB2661254, KB2749655 & KB2724197;

   (c) KB2705219 & KB2712808;

   (d) KB2698365, KB2691442, KB2655992 & KB2719985;

   (e) KB2393802 and especially Update for Windows XP (KB971029).

Most will be displayed as Security Update for Windows XP followed by the KB number in parentheses.

If IE8 is installed, one (1) will be displayed as Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 8 followed by the KB number in parentheses.

6a. Is Java Version 7 Update 11 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

6b. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.5.502.146 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) =>http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

7. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

8. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton PC Tuneup; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleanerRegistry Cleaner)?

9. Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install or even a clean install of WinXP for any reason?

1a. MSE was not installed by Windows Update. I googled it and downloaded from the Microsoft site.

1b. 25th November 2011, 19:19:35

1c. 4.1.522.0

2. AVG. No subscription. Yes, I uninstalled it. Also I downloaded Malwarebytes a couple of months ago. I ran a full scan and then uninstalled it.

3. I don't think so. It is just possible that I had Norton, if so that was more than 3 years ago.

4. Computer was a gift from my son about 3 years ago. He upgraded.

5. Checking the updates was a lengthy task but eventually I found all of them. Note that I found KB2753842 and KB2753842 v2 and KB2661254 v2 not KB2661254.

6a. I have Java Version 7 Update 9 (Not 11). Update 11 is available and I will download it shortly unless you advise otherwise.

6b. I have Adobe Flash Player v11.5.502.146.

7. Firefox and Chrome are both installed but they are not the default browser and I rarely use them.

8. I use Registry Mechanic and Tweak-XP Pro (a Microsoft utility that came free with Windows XP) once a week. I have Registry Easy on my computer but have not used it for months. I also used to have Tune Up Utilities but have not used for over 6 months.

9. I had some serious problems last September and did a Recovery. This took me back to the basic XP operating system and I had to install all updates. It is now working fine. The Event ID 5000 Error was occurring before the recovery.

many thanks for your efforts.

John

I had some serious problems last September and did a Recovery. This took me back to the basic XP operating system and I had to install all updates...

1. By "last September," are you referring to September 2012 or September 2011?

2. What installation media did you use to do the Recovery (e.g., the discs that came with the computer-in-question when your son bought it; the hidden Recovery partition)?

3. Did the Recovery leave you with WinXP Gold (i.e., no Service Packs), WinXP SP1, WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

4. Do you have backups of ALL the changes registry cleaners have EVER made to your computer since you did the Recovery last September? [1]

===========================================================
[1] Injudicious use of registry cleaners may be playing a role here. TIP: If you ever again think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, maximized, "swept" or optimised (it doesn't), read http://chris.pirillo.com/are-registry-cleaners-safe-to-use/ and/or http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/ then draw your own conclusions. Thank you for your latest post. Here are my responses.

1. I meant September 2012. However, this was a guess and I have now checked more accurately on "Update History" and find that it was 21/05/2012.

2. I used a Recovery disc that I generated in September 2007.

3. I have checked the "Update History" and find that after Recovery I installed SP3. I cannot find any reference to SP1 or SP2.

4. No. I have a full set of back-ups for Registry Mechanic but nothing for the other cleaners.

   Thank you for your comments on the use of registry cleaners.

Regards, John

Something's not add up here: If you used the "Recovery disc" to do a clean install of WinXP on 21 May 2012, how can...

           C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client <=this folder

have a Created date of 25 November 2011?

I confirm that the above dates are correct. I tried to attach a Screen print showing the date but not possible. I quote line from Microsoft Update History:

"Win XP  Windows Service Pack 3(KB936929)  Tick (successful)  21 May 2012 Windows Update"

Also I quote:

Microsoft Security Client Properties

Tab: General

Type: File Folder

Location:  C:\Program Files

Size:  21.2MB (22,230,000bytes)

Size: on disk  21.2 MB (22,230,000 bytes)

Contains: 47 Files, 8 Folders

Created: 25 November 2011 19:19:35

Attributes:  Tick  Read only

                 No tick  Hidden

   If the above dates are not compatible then error must be in use of Recovery disk.

Sounds like you did a Repair Install, not a clean install, of Windows, John.

Repair Install => http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Clean install => http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

You are probably right, I must have done a Repair Install. After 7 months the memory dims. However, I definitely had the ID 5000 problem before that date. I keep a record of all Error IDs and these show the following occurences in brackets:

2011: Nov (7), Dec (7)

2012: Jan (0), Feb (3), Mar (6), April (51!), May (0), June (1), July (2), Aug (2), Sept (1), Oct (0), Nov (4), Dec (6)

2013: Jan (6) to date.

   I would like to stop these errors or at least understand why they are happening.

Thanks for your help. John
