How to set up Mozilla Thunderbird to sync Outlook.com account

Technical Level : Basic

Summary
Many Outlook.com mail account users use Mozilla Thunderbird to sync their accounts. This article provides IMAP manual settings information for setting up Outlook.com mail account in case it doesn't setup automatically.
Details

Many Outlook.com mail account users use Mozilla Thunderbird to sync their accounts. When you add an Outlook.com account in Mozilla Thunderbird, it looks for the configuration in its Mozilla ISP database and configures it automatically. But some users may not get Thunderbird to sync with their Outlook.com account. So one can set it up manually.

Open Mozilla Thunderbird, From Tools menu (or Alt+T) > Account Settings > Account Actions > Add Mail Account , Input your Outlook.com mail account information, Click Continue and if needed, click on Manual Config and add these settings information:

For the Incoming:

  • Server hostname: imap-mail.outlook.com
  • Port: 993
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password

For the Outgoing:

  • Server hostname: smtp-mail.outlook.com
  • Port: 587
  • SSL: STARTTLS
  • Authentication: Normal password

Click Done.

For setting up Outlook.com mail account from many popular mail apps, one can refer to this link for details.

Are you trying to configure Hotmail.com account manually, is it not doing it auto?

Have you tried to login to your account via web? Open browser & go to Outlook.com or Hotmail.com and try to login.

Also in thunderbird, in Username you have to enter <username>@Hotmail.com , I hope you have not missed the '@hotmail.com' part.

Thank you for replying. Yes of course i have used @hotmail.com

In my nokia6330i classic the popper is working perfectly.

In mozilla thunderbird i get error only on Microsoft accounts.

Every other e-mail i'm using (yahoo/gmail/school mail) are working with popper settings.

I have the same problem with both Thunderbird and with Outlook 2010. It is very annoying, and like you I have followed all the directions correctly. I have no problem with other web based email programs like gmail. I can login using the Android app and byt the web no problem.

I can receive messages, but cannot send.  I have METICULOUSLY checked that the settings are correct.  Common Outlook, don't make me frustrated like this.  Every other email system out there works with Thunderbird, Outlook does not.

We are not the problem, Outlook is.

Thanks. I was looking for an tutorial to connect Outlook account with my SeaMonkey E-Mail Client.

It's seriously the best web browser because it's whole Internet Application Suite, like Netscape Navigator & Internet Explorer 4/5/6, and I really want to look at my emails without opening up tabs and making my SeaMonkey web browser messy.
