Can't open pdf files in outlook.com

I use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers to access the internet, and then sign into Outlook.com / Hotmail.com to access my emails.  I have always been able to view or download PDF files attached to emails that I receive.  However, after a Windows update, I find I am now unable to download or even view PDF attachments to emails that I receive.  When I click on the PDF attachment file to view it, I get a message saying "Something went wrong while the document preview was being created.  Please try again later."  When I click on "Download", I get a new window with a blank screen.  I did a system restore to return my computer to before the last windows update, but that didn't work.  I reinstalled Adobe Reader and that didn't do anything either.  Please help!

I also use Google Chrome browser and for the past four days, when I go into outlook.com to get my emails, I cannot open any PDF attachments.

I can open these attachments when I access my emails on my iphone but I need to be able to do it on my PC so that I can print them.

Please help!

Alan Thomson

Hi Christopher,

To isolate the issue, have you tried to reinstall Adobe Reader on your computer?

We are looking forward to your response.

Both myself and my wife are having this same problem.

Both use Chrome (latest version). Outlook.com was clearly upgraded recently as it has a new look and new features - it even started with a 'looks what's new in this update' wizard, so it's definitely had a major change.

Until a few days ago I could open, view or download pdf attachments from emails accessed via Outlook.com.

I have acrobat reader installed (a very recent version).

I can forward those emails to my work account and open the pdf's with no problems there (Outlook desktop client).

I can click on the download link or the download option from the dropdown but I just get the hourglass circle for a short while, then nothing. Same with the view option.

I don't use OneDrive so haven't tried that.

I have same problem.  I was able to get the "view" .pdf to work with i.e. 11 browser on Win7 after reinstalling Adobe Reader DC (free).  However, it still does not work with Firefox or Chrome browser.  I researched and found some info that indicated that browser plug-ins and add-ons such as adobe acrobat are not being allowed for security reasons.  Chrome claims to have built-in .pdf reader but apparently it doesn't work... at least not yet.  They seriously need to come up with a solution to this issue ASAP.
