You're currently signed in with an Office 365 email account, which can't be used with Outlook.com

I originally posted about this issue almost a year ago.  I provided Fiddler traces twice, and was promised escalation to support specialists several times.  I have yet to receive a basic answer to my question

The issue is this:  I've had a Passport / Live Id / Microsoft account for many, many years.  I have all my Microsoft-related context associated with this account, including a Windows Phone, Windows and Windows Phone apps, lots of SkyDrive data, lots of contact and calendar entries, etc.

The main email address for this account is a @cornell.edu email address.  This is an alumni address that basically forwards to another email address.  Right now that's a gmail address, but I was hoping to change that.

Anyway, at one point in time I was suddenly unable to access Outlook.com.  I started seeing the following error, which persists to this day:

This account can't be used to access Outlook.com

You're currently signed in with an Office 365 email account, which can't be used with Outlook.com. Please click here to sign out of your Office 365 account, then use another Microsoft account to sign in to Outlook.com (for example, your hotmail.com, live.com, or msn.com account).

I have no relationship to Office365.  However, I suspect that the cause is that Cornell University is now on Office 365, and for some reason that's made my cornell.edu account unusable with Outlook.com.

I've been asked to talk to Cornell's email administrators, but they have nothing to do with this.  The problem, as far as I can tell, is that Outlook.com isn't smart enough to figure out that my account isn't an Office 365 account, and Office 365 isn't smart enough to bounce me back to Outlook.com.

I'd really appreciate some help with this, and not the kind of help that promises escalation and then never delivers.

Thanks.

Hi,

Regarding the Office 365 error that you're getting, a fix is currently in process as per our Microsoft Engineers latest update but we don't have a definite time when it'll be rolled out.

We apologize for any inconvenience that the issue has caused you. We'll post again once they verified that the fix is already good to go.

Thanks!
Lanie
