Why do I Receive invalid Username error, when trying to login to "try the new outlook"?

I am having trouble accessing the new Outlook for Windows to "test drive" it, using my current Microsoft Sign-In (present email address).

1-I use Microsoft Mail on my home PC, Windows 10. When I open the app, in the upper right hand corner of the screen, there is a message "try the New Outlook" (there is an eventual mandatory transition to Outlook coming). I decided to 'try the new Outlook".

2-A screen titled "Signing You in to the New Outlook for Windows" appears, and then a screen titled "Sync your IMAP account" appears, including my present email address. I click Continue.

3-The screen displays my current email address, and I am asked to enter my IMAP password, which I do, and click continue.

4-The next screen asks me to enter a valid email address, and offers an old email address, as a "suggested account".

(That address is now invalid as I no longer use it, and, that is no longer available with my prior provider (Centurytel). It was, however, my original email address when I set up Microsoft Mail.)

5-Since I no longer have that email address, I delete it and replace it with my current email address, and click continue.

6-I am taken to a sign-in page, displaying my current email address (that I just entered). I click Next. The ensuing screen gives me an error message that says:

"This username may be incorrect. Make sure your typed it correctly, otherwise contact your admin." If I enter the old email address I receive the same error message.

7-For what it is worth, when I want to sign-in to Microsoft, I use the (same) email address that I just entered above and get in with out incident.

8-I accessed details to try to troubleshoot, and there was a general problem description of Invalid Credentials. I can login to Microsoft.com with my present email address, so citing Invalid Credentials doesn't make sense to me.

I am obviously making a mistake, and ask if someone can help me out with this. Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, it seems that your Microsoft credentials is not recognized when you login in New Outlook in your Mail App. Let's work on this together in finding the best possible solution to your concern.

To better understand the situation, I would like to ask some questions, such as:

  • Just to clarify, when you say Mail app, are you referring to Outlook desktop application or Windows Mail Application?

  • What email domain are you using? ex. Hotmail.com, Live.com, Outlook.com, etc.

  • What error message are you getting when you setup the account?

This issue is quite interesting since you are only experiencing the issue inside the Mail application. It also gives me an impression that this might be a temporary issue. If you are indeed using the Windows Mail app, you can try logging in to Outlook application (if available) then test the New Outlook option and see if you will get the same error.

Looking for your response soon!

Sincerely,

Leonardo_Y

Thank you for helping me!

Here are answers to your questions.

I am using the Windows Mail Application.

My domain is Socket.net

This is the error message I receive. "This username may be incorrect. Make sure your typed it correctly, otherwise contact your admin."

Leonardo_Y- Please note, I haven't setup the account yet. I get a screen that says, to add my IMAP account to Outlook, it will sync my emails to Microsoft Cloud. I enter my IMAP password, and click continue. I receive a welcome screen and am asked to enter my account name. The box for me to enter the account name, is pre-populated with an old account of mine, that I no longer have, nor is it active with my old provider. It is called a "suggested account". I delete that account name, and enter my current account name. That is when I receive the error message.

Again, thanks for your help!!!

Hi J Cohen1,

Apologies for the late response, hope your doing well.

The reason why you can't login your socket.net is because you haven't set up the account yet. Do not click the Other account (POP, IMAP) option instead select the Advance setup. Follow the guide accordingly on how to add your @socket.net email account in Windows Mail App.

  1. Open Windows Mail App

  2. click +Add account

  3. scroll down and look for Advance setup

  4. after click Advance setup, you should see two options

    - Exchange ActiveSync - for Exchange and other accounts that use Exchange ActiveSync

    - Internet email - POP or IMAP accounts that let you view your email in a web browser

  5. select Internet email

  6. you will then be prompted to setup the account. You need to fill out all the fields required to setup the account. You need to use @socket.net server configuration settings to completely setup the account.

You need to use this server email configurations:

  • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is used for receiving emails. The IMAP settings for socket.net are:

    - incoming mail server: mail.socket.net

    - IMAP port: 993 (requires SSL) or 143 (non-secure)

  • SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used for sending emails. The SMTP settings for socket.net are:

    - Outgoing mail server: mail.socket.net

    - SMTP port: 465 (requires SSL) or 587 (non-secure)

Once your done putting the details, you will then be prompted to the Windows Mail App inbox.

Sincerely,

Leonardo_Y
