Why are my oldest emails not showing in my Hotmail inbox?

I've had a hotmail account since about 1997...i'm an email hoarder when it comes to personal emails. I know I've had emails from at least very early 2000s in my inbox. Just looking today and it seems I have no emails older than 2018 in my inbox anymore. The main window shows I have a little over 10,000 emails in my Inbox BUT if I go to Outlook settings and check out how much storage I'm using, that section tells me my Inbox has a little over 15,000 emails which sounds correct.

Why is there a 5000 email difference between what my main Inbox shows and what the Storage shows in the settings?

Where are all my emails earlier than 2018? I use this account daily so it's not that its dormant and I didn't accidentally erase 20 years of emails. Kind of annoying.

Hi,

Greetings

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, it seems that you have numerous email missing on your Outlook account. We need to investigate this to find the best possible solution to this problem.

We would like to ask additional information to properly replicate this in our end, such as:

  • Just to clarify, are you referring to your Outlook.com accessed using a browser online or using a Software application?

  • May I ask for some screenshots of the problem you are having to have a clearer picture on what's going on to your hotmail account?

We understand the time and effort you spend on this but we would like to ask this information first to provide you with the most relevant and concrete answers to this issue.

We look forward for your response!

This is accessing my hotmail account through Google Chrome web browser. Attached are images where on the main page it shows I have 10471 messages in my INBOX. If I go to Outlook settings and look at my storage use, there it says I have 15,858 messages. The last pic shows the last email in my inbox is from 2018. It should have stuff dating back to 2000s.

There are 10471 unread email in your Inbox. Check if there's any Filter (to the right of Received column). Also try clicking Received column header to change the sorting (old to new, new to old).

Hi,

Thank you for your response, apologies for the delay.

We just want to confirm if you still have enough space on your Outlook storage, kindly click on this link for the guide Mailbox storage limits in Outlook on the web (microsoft.com). Did you receive any notification stating that your account is already above quota limit?

We will be waiting for your reply

Yep, only using 3.22 of 15GB.

I'm not sure when all my old emails suddenly disappeared. Every so often I go and look back on them for something and recently had to find something only to find all those emails from 2017 and earlier are now gone.

Hi,

Just want to ask some additional questions, such as:

  • Have you checked the deleted folder and in the archive folder?

Excuse us for the follow up questions, its just that old emails should not disappear automatically unless it has been deleted or you've reached the quota limit. Kindly make use of this support article Email is missing from your Outlook.com inbox (microsoft.com) and check all the possible options where this missing emails is located.

Sincerely,

Yes, I've checked every possible folder. This is a mystery. They're just gone and there's no way I accidentally deleted about 17 years of emails by accident. I'm puzzled and can't figure it out.
