Why am I not receiving emails?

I have not received any emails in my inbox since friday.  I have sent a test email from my works email address but have not received this either.   I have sent an email from my iphone to my works email address which worked but nothing when I replied.  I am getting loads of emails in my junk folder still though.

Hello kellydavis287,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

If I understood correctly you are unable to receive emails and when you tried to send a test email to your account using your work email you were unable to receive it. However, the test email sent from your iPhone was received by your account. You are also receiving a lot of junk mail. Let me help you with that. To address your first concern, it would be better if you can provide us more information to better understand the issue by answering the following questions:

  • Does the same issue occur when using your account on a different browser/computer?
  • Does the same issue occur when using a different Outlook.com account on the same browser/computer?
  • When did the issue start to occur?
  • Are you unable to receive emails from a particular contact or from all your contacts?
  • Do the emails that you can't receive contain file attachments?
  • Did you receive any error message? If yes, please include the exact error message in your reply.

In addition, I have created a private message area where you can provide some information that we can use to determine the cause of the issue. Just click on the "You have a private reply to this message" link above your post to view the message.

Make sure that you are signed in to the forum to view the link.

To address your concern on receiving junk emails, I would advise you to add the email addresses/domains of the senders of junk mails to your Blocked senders list to prevent unknown or unwanted contacts from sending you unwanted messages. Please be informed that messages from blocked senders are automatically deleted. Here are the steps on how to do this:

1. From your Inbox, click the gear icon on the upper right corner beside your name.
2. Select More mail settings.
3. Under Preventing junk email, click Safe and blocked senders.
4. Click Blocked senders.
5. Enter the email address or domain in the field labeled Blocked email address or domain: and click Add to list >>. Make sure that you enter the correct email address/domain.

It is also possible that your junk filter setting is set to Standard. We advise you to set your Junk email filtering level to Exclusive because if you set your filter to this, only messages from your contacts and Safe senders lists will be allowed to go to your Inbox, the rest will go to your Junk folder. Below are the steps on how to do this:

1. From your Inbox, click the gear icon on the upper right corner beside your name.
2. Select More mail settings.
3. Under Preventing junk email, click Filters and reporting.
4. Choose Exclusive.
5. Click Save.

Note: You should occasionally check your junk email folder to make sure that good messages don't get put there by mistake. Also, your Junk folder is regularly cleaned up. So you need not to delete those emails manually.

You can also create an email rule that will either automatically delete the junk message or move it to another folder. Here are the steps:

1. From your Inbox, click the gear icon on the upper right corner beside your name.
2. Go to More mail settings.
3. Under Customizing Outlook, click Rules for sorting new messages.
4. Click New.
5. Under Step 1, select the email attribute from the drop-down list and type the email address that you want to apply the rule to.
6. Under Step 2, determine where you want the messages to be moved or what you want to do to that email (e.g. if it would be auto Deleted):
    a. To move the messages to an existing folder, choose Move to Inbox, and then click the folder name
    b. To move the messages to a new folder, choose Move to a new folder and type the name for the folder you want to create.
    c. To delete the messages, choose Delete these messages.
    d. To forward messages, select Forward to and type the email address where you wish to forward the said emails.
7. Click Save.

Note: On instances where the spammer just changes the domain (sending email address), it would be better if you would create an email rule that will specify the subject instead of the sender's email address. (e.g. If the email contains the word "Viagra", delete the email).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Hi D. D.Sherman ,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum. Let me address your concern.

If a specific email address is not on your contact list and if the system detects that a message is possibly a spam email, it will go directly to your Spam or Junk folder. What I suggest is for you to add Pandora's account to your contact and Safe senders list to be able to receive the emails to your Inbox.

Please be informed that Spam folder is called Junk folder in Outlook.com.

Should you have more concern, feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Lei

Hi,

I've stopped receiving emails since yesterday lunchtime too. Is MS having problems with their servers?

Everything was working fine right up till that point and I have not changed a thing with my account or settings...

I am in the UK too (in case this info helps).

Please help! I need this fixed today!!

Thanks,

Dan

OK, so after a long time deliberating with MS support, it now appears that the server that my mail account is using (Dub129) is completely down. (See here: http://www.websitedown.info/dub129-m.hotmail.com).

This will be affecting many people...

Hopefully when it comes back up, I'll get all my emails from yesterday and this morning and they wont be lost forever... (or at least the senders will get an "email undeliverable" message).

I'll keep you up to date!

Dan

Hello Dan,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community forum. I know how frustrating it must be to have difficulties with receiving emails and we appreciate you bringing this matter into our attention.

If in case you're still having problems with receiving emails, we strongly recommend that you check the service status of your account here to determine if this is indeed occurring due to an ongoing server maintenance that is affecting your email account.

It would also help us continue with the investigation if you'll post your affected email address in the private message area that I've created for security reasons. This would help us conduct an in-depth investigation to figure out what's causing the issue and immediately provide you the appropriate resolution. To view it, just click on the "You have a private reply to this message" link above your post and make sure that you are signed in to the forum to view the link.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you.

Hi Karla,

Thanks for your help!

I've replied privately. I checked the status using your link and everything is showing the green tick to symbolise that everything is ok, but i'm still having the problem...

is there any way the account can be turned off and then on again? that might help it come back up. But would i lose all my emails? and what about the emails that have been sent to me during the time my accounts have been down?
